I read on another site( tradrag I believe) that Fred never killed a p/y whitetail
And mentioned that in the book ( my years following Fred Bear...i think)
He only killed 38 whitetails in his life( the author recollected)

Don't think so. Story said tranquilizer. I assume they would overdose the pod so it would kill the animal pretty quick

there was a place you could go "hunting", you tracked the critter shot it, with a "trank" thay cut the horns off the critter you got the horns, the owner got the money, and the critter got up and walked away "withaheadace"..
it was on the electric tv a wile back. all i could thing is no meat, nope not good for me or any bowhunter

Still legal in Miss. last time I checked. Pic of a couple I was given while living there.

The POD is legal in Mississippi but the use of the drug is not legal..it is a controlled substance that requires a prescription to get the stuff....Vet's used to use to put down animals but it was so bad and unpredicable they stopped using it......so if you think you vcan go to Missisissippi and use it, you will be illegal because no vet will give you any...

Yep, I read a lot about Mr. Bear pushing to get the pod legalized.
He was all for it, because he believed it would contribute to higher success/recovery rates for bowhunters.

The two reasons I heard why they made them illegal were:

1 - to much of a potential for an accident for the hunter where they exposed themselves to the drug, either by accidental self injection, or by exposure during
                      the filed dressing & processing.

2 - worries about consumption of the meat of a drugged animal.

Don't remember who it was, but a company designed a pod very similar to the one pictured above, that delivers a chemical that shines real bright when hit with a flashlight beam.

Something you might consider is that Papa Bear and others in his era took very loooong shots (some in the 100 yd. range), thus the higher potenital for an non-lethal hit. This could be (my speculation only) why Fred wanted to use the drug, to score a kill even if the hit was marginal.

                          None-the-less an interesting read.

Succinylcholine Chloride, or Anectine, is a muscle relaxant that can induce total paralysis. Deer are reported to be much more sensitive to it than are humans, which is why it is chosen for deer hunting. It is illegal to buy or sell Anectine in Mississippi, though a black market exists.

It is legal to purchase Anectine in the neighboring state of Alabama. Some Mississippi hunters purchase "the pod" in Alabama for use in Mississippi. ( at least this was true the last time I checked, which was admittedly a couple of years ago)
