Looking to get back to basics

I am a compund bow hunter but feel a need to get back to some traditional basics. I want to try a recurve or a longbow but am overwhelmed at where to start. I am not looking to drop a bunch of money just in case its not for me. I am told Samick bows are a good starting point, such as the Sage or Red Stag. What are your guys thoughts on how to get started on the cheap?

    Billy,

The Sage is a good started bow and it's not expensive. The Red Stag is a one piece design. The Sage is a takedown - thus you can start with a 40 lb. set of limbs and later buy a heavier set if you are so inclined. My vote is for the Sage.

          Hey Billy -
I have a 40# Samick Sage that you are welcome to borrow for a while to see if you like the trad side. I have half dozen or so arrows tuned to that bow you could borrow as well. I live in the Aledo/Weatherford area and work off S. Hulen in Ft Worth so it should be easy for us to cross paths if you are interested.

See my post #64 last night in the Forum Question thread.

This is a case in point.

            You guys rock.

Welcome to trad. I suspect youll be hooked in no time.

              Thanks for your service,

The Sage is a great bow and you can get completely outfitted (bow, arrows, rug rest, glove, stringer) for right around $200. I'd recommend getting a different string immediately as the string that comes with the bow is junk.

I shot mine for about 6 months before expanding the stable, lately it hasn't been getting as much use but it still performs very well when I do take it off the rack.

I was just thinking the same thing you were Billy and this is actually my first time in the traditional section. Let me know if you like that bow.

That would be great! I work on the Navy Base so we could cross paths very easily. Thanks for the offer, this board is so awesome!

Go for it!!! Listen to these folks or better yet, find some guys in your area and learn from them. It is a blast, humbling, but a blast.
