    Longbows can keep ya humble

Thought I would share this little bit or nostalgia with ya'll...

Over 30 years ago I had the fortune (maybe it was misfortune) to be shooting at a friends’ house. I always thought myself to be a very good shot. Had won many tournaments barebow style with compounds. (2 years only.. have to qualify this first off) anyhow I digress.. I had been shooting very well this day and my buddy told me he had a bow that he doubted I could even hit a target with at 15 yards. Now, this was a challenge if I ever heard one! Being as cocky as I am, I told him I could shoot any bow after a couple of quick shots to feel the bow out. I would show this guy he was out in the field all alone on this one.

He went in the house and came back out with a HUGE!!!!! longbow – this thing was 72 inches long – 68 lbs. @ 28 inches and WOW! Now I could handle bows in the 85# + range so I wasn’t worried at all. I pulled out an arrow and drew – man it drew easy – no let-off or break in the draw. I anchored, then released. Hit 5 yards in front of the target. took out another arrow and drew back – released -DANG – over the target this time. OK – I got this thing figured out! Nocked another arrow – drew and released – hit 3 feet to the right this time. Closer to the target but no cigar.

To make a longer story short – I shot over 50 arrows at that target and hit it once! I was humbled to say the least. I looked at my buddy who was in hysterics (Real Funny) I asked him if he could hit the target – he drew and smacked it dead center. MAN THIS INFURIATED me. Not at him but at myself. I looked at him and asked him to sell me the bow – he laughed and told me no. I kept on him and finally he gave in. I gave him my compound and told him to sell it. I went home, and for the next 6 months I shot 150-200 arrows a day out of it. By the time spring came around I was ready and entered in several archery tournaments locally. Now here is the kicker – I was the only one shooting a stick so I had to compete against the compound guys (barebow) the same guys I shot against with my compound. My first shoot I came in second place!!! Man did I feel good. It was a heck of a lot of work to get there but I never ever regretted it nor have I looked back since.

I remember the days of being the solo stick bow at shoots as well. What a blast to compete with the wheels and hold your own.

Ah-HA. So the secret to shooting a longbow lights out is shooting 100-150 arrows a DAY every day for SIX MONTHS, huh?
Welp, that explains my mediocrity and even after I retire, I am not sure I will be shooting THAT much (but..maybe...)

                      Martha,

Those days of dedicating that much time to shooting my longbow is long gone. Now I have to accept the fact that I am getting older and can't even think about shooting a bow that much. Still have a lot of fun though!

One or two dozen at a stretch is about right.

It isn't always that way Doug. I was hunting on the "C" Ranch with some friends quite a few years ago. Jim Wieson was one of them. This is before he owned Archery Country. Jim is just an unbelievable shot. I have seen him shoot five arrows in a cigarette pack at 80 yards with a compound and fingers, and this was while on a deer hunt in Colorado. He has never shot tournaments, that I know of, either.

At lunch I was shooting on the practice bales with an older gentleman that had a long bow. Jim came out and asked to shoot our bows. His first group was about 6" and we were shooting at 20 yards. It was about a foot to the left so I went to the truck and got 3 more bows. One of them was on the money for him. He shot non stop until time to go out hunting. He killed a javalina that evening with it.

I'm like you Doug, I had to work my butt off to get to the level I am, and it's not as good as he was shooting that day. It must be great to just be a natural at this like he is. Thank goodness he's real humble about it.

Well, I *think* I may be even older than you "Ol Man" (62.5 here)
I shot about 50 arrows at the range on Sunday, but I need to do it EVERY DAY, apparently, to improve, or maintain any "gains" I achieve when I DO actually practice. That, and go back to picking up the free weights to maintain muscle tone . I thought my cataract surgery/new lenses would do the trick for me, but the macular degeneration they found keeps me from ever having 20-20 vision. Much better than before though!
There ain't no way I'll ever be shooting 150 every single day, though...that old cliche' "gettin old ain't for sissies" is TRUE <sigh>. But we gotta keep on keepin' on, lol.
And YES, it still is fun, even on a bad day! If you weren't going to Buff's for WAR-FAB, I'd suggest you come to the Denton County Archers TBoT shoot that weekend and show us all how it's done
