Yes there is a board bow in that board maybe 2 or 3 . You will need to back them imo. Hickory will work fine. Call me Blood I think you have my #.

So how should I cut this board? It's 8 feet long, 8 inches wide and one inch thick. Should I cut 4 two inch wide strips?

Cut 2'' wide strips till you get to those splits and knots for starters.

Arvin, when we talked, you talked about cutting a backing. What's a backing do? Don't laff, I'm a noob!

the backing will probably keep it from blowing up, or splintering on you.Bowyers Bible tells all.

Just curious, are you cutting the strips until you get past the splits and knots? When looking at boards, are you looking for a clear piece of wood with more growth rings per inch?

I build mostly unbacked selfbows following a single growth ring and yes you can work around some knots. the cleaner the piece of wood the better and I like tite growth rings 1/8 on late rings fine as you can get early rings.Board bows should be clean if not find another board.

Watch those check lines(cracks) in the board! These will cause failure even if backed. Also make sure that your backing is no thicker than 1/8"! Too thick a backing fights against you.

A better and much easier to work backing would be bamboo. Hickory is hard!!!

I read that bamboo was harder to glue up and to tiller than Hickory due to the in consistent thickness caused by the nodes. Maybe I misundersood.
