    Rounded tip on two-blade broadhead?

I bought some Zephyr Siroccos recently because they came in the grain weight that tuned best with my arrows. They are pretty sharp right out of the package but I decided to touch them up a bit. I noticed on the back of the package that they recommend filing the tip from the factory made sharp point to a more rounded "spade" shape. Is this commonly done with cut on contact heads? Is it to prevent tip-curl when impacting bone? Is using a file the best way to accomplish this?

It is called a Tanto tip. Several broadheads come that way. The Zephyrs are bad about bending at the point and so they recommend that you do this. To me if this needs to be done because the tips bend so easily then they need to change the way they are made and you should not have to fix that problem. That is just the way I feel about it. I have shot some Zephyrs and did not like the way the performed so I went to a different head. You will find others out there who love them and will swear by them. Magnus broadheads are bad about bending at the tip also but at least they have the lifetime warranty so if you bend one you can just send it back to them and they will send you a new one.

I normally shoot them with the sharp point until they curl, then take a file and round them off. I believe it is pretty common to to do this.

Learned to do it years ago with the old Bear heads.. I pretty much do it to all two bladed heads unless the manufacturer does it for me.. just a habit..

Other than the Zephyrs, the only screw-in two blade broadhead in the 145-150 range I have been able to find is the Silver Flames, which I would like to try for deer but worry about a pig running off with a $30 head. Any other screw-in 150's you know of?

You should be able to make just about any 125gr glue on head work with a glue in adapter. I am pretty sure that Magnus makes a 2 blade 150gr stinger.

              Have you looked at these?

They don't get any better than these.

Thanks Rick and Mike - those both seem like what I'm looking for....

The way I have been doing it jerp is not worry about broadhead weight. Just pay attention to total up front weight. Then pick any broadhead and get the right insert/adaptor/bh combo to get that weight.

My target up front weight is 290-300 grains. So when I bought my ace heads that weigh 175 I got the 125 brass glue in broadhead adaptors.

If you actually contact the people at horne's archery, they will tell you to disregard that, that was what the previous owner recommended, and they still have lots of the old packaging. Get em sharp, and watch them zipp through critters.

I killed lots of critters with zephyr broadheads.
I never rounded the tip, and never bent one.
By the way I was shooting them from a 96# recurve on a 605gr arrow that was traveling way over 200 fps, so I would say they were being put to the test pretty good.

I like the looks of those heads, too bad they don't make them in a single bevel then they would truely be Penetrators.....

Get STOS and be done with it, they come with a Tanto tip and I can't remember ever bending one. For the money they are the best heads out there until you start paying nearly twice the price.. I shoot the 160's. They are glue on's but as mentioned you can use adapters with different weights and achieve what you are looking to do.
