    Group Size?

Hi, guys and gals most of you know I'm new here. I am a border line compulsive, maybe not border line, lol. I have a 20 yard range in my back yard, the barn I can shoot as far as I like, and I do like to shoot long range (sling shots, rifles, pistols and bows). I always figured the if I practiced at 60 yards the 20 yard shots are a chip shot. Now I've been on the traditional ride for the last few years and I have a hard time going hunting with a 3 inch group at 20 yards. I am just new to traditional, I have shot a bow for most of my life. I shot (fingers) for Darton and a local shop for several years. I am shooting consistent 3inch groups traditional, is that good enough for yall? I think I need lessons, I have tried to figure this out on my on from the beginning.

What do you consider a great group for traditional shooting at 20 yards? Thanks...

Yea like Deb said......LOL Consistence 3" groups at 20 yards are great, but you are only ready when you feel you are ready. I try only to take shots at game 15yards or less, but will step out to 20 if everything feel perfect. Start on pigs or small game if you don't feel ready for deer, but get out and kill something.....

If you are shooting consistent 3" groups at 20yds then you are doing GREAT! Go hunting and kill a big one and show us a pic.

I guess what I should have asked is; do you ever get as comfortable with a traditional bow as you once were with a compound (if you shot compound)? I am a long way from being there.

Ok, 3 inch in my backyard with occasional flyer, 3 inches turns into 12 inches when its not in the back yard shooting the same old target. Back yard being the key statement, same distance, same target day after day. I gap shoot so it's easy to be consistent in the back yard. When I shoot unknown distance at the barn it's not with the same success. I guess I just do not trust my abilities yet.

BountyHunter that's what I need to, go thin some hogs out. I have shot and ate 2 rabbits, but I missed more than a few.

BTW, my ability at 20 yds has next to nothing with my confidence to hunt. I rarely shoot a live critter at 20yds or beyond. It has happened (with success) but everything has to just "feel right" for me to take a shot that far at a live animal. Almost everything I shoot is under 15yds. That is where I want my shooting to be great. I set up all my stands for a 12-14yd shot. That way if they come in clost it should be a chip shot and if they come in farther out it should still be under 20yds.

Just figure out at what distance you are confident in your ability and don't hunt past that distance.

Thanks, I read that and maybe I need to go back to the stump shooting. This morning I limped out (gout has been kicking my butt) and shot, my first arrow was 9" low to the right then the next 3 were touching were I was aiming, then 3 more tight groups.

When I posted I was up all day after working 12 hour nights kinda like being a little drunk, I could have chosen my wording better. After a reading I see I came across a little goofy, I knew what I meant, lol.

Far as hunting I have always picked my shots and I have no problem passing up a deer. I brag on my 7 yards shots far more than the 2 40 yards shoots that I have made with a compound. When I lived at the ranch I had an 80 yard range that I shot my compound daily with confidence, I'm a long way from being confident with my longbow, like I mentioned above my first shot today would have missed or worse shot a deer in the leg.

Yall have fun at Sarrels today, I wish that I could go and meet you guys and gals...

Rabbits and squirrels ain't hard to miss......LOL I've missed and come close on far more than I've killed. I do tend take a little longer shot on rabbits than I ever would on deer. Hog I also like to keep in my 15 yards or less zone, kinda like practice for deer.

Shooting a group is ok I guess but I will put my money on the guy that can put his first
( cold ) shot in the kill zone , no matter if its 5yds or 30yds. Never liked shooting for a group , I like one arrow per target sitting , standing , leaning , over the shoulder , ect , and always vary the distance for each shot.Seldom do I get to shoot a group into a live deer , but it sounds like you are doing well to me. 3in at 20 is better than I can do.

I am like Sam I shoot one arrow at a time and pull it all during hunting season. I am by no means as good as Sam I just shoot one arrow at a time into a target. I also try to make my first shot of the day the best. Dont worry about these critters on here they find a loop hole and they will shoot. HA HA!!!!!
