I have been shooting a couple of my long bows and recording the noise made when I release the string. One has the normal puffy ball things that look like they are made from yarn and the other one has the rubber spider leg looking stuff.
I have the Beaver Balls on a recurve, but I didn't test that one against the sound made from the long bows. The recurve is always little louder than my long bows.
I have always liked beaver balls. However, I made up a new string for my Foley longbow and found that I was out of them. I shoot three under and the bow has always been kinda loud. Well I found some of those string leeches from back when I worked on compounds and I stuck those in there. A WORLD of difference, and didn't affect the speed that I can tell. I got a couple comments on how quiet the bow was at a 3-D shoot the following weekend. I now have them in my other bows and found they have helped much more than the beaver balls. I know, they aren't very traditional looking but hey, it has really done a great job of quieting my bows down.

Thanks Larry, I'm going to give them a try.
I've been trying to quiet a new string on my Hatfield for over a month now and it's driving me nuts.
I don't know what is "best" but I have 100% wool yarn silencers on all my bows. I bought one ball of yarn at Michael's for about $8.00 and I have enough yarn to silence every bow i own till I die.
In my experience the yarn after a rain will slow the arrow down a very noticeable rate. Just practice with it wet and they should work great, they're definitively quiet.
I use the rabbit furs from Hobby Lobby and cut them into little strips and wrap the string and they are very quiet and last great and seem to be impervious to water as well. Poor man's BEAVER BALLS.
bare bow 65.8 decibles
rubber whiskers 60.2 dec
beaver fur 60.9 dec
rubber slugs 60.5
yarn wrapped on the string tips 64.9 dec
I later emailed the author and asked him to do the same test on Quviut Musk ox. He did the musk ox as he had tested the others and the musk ox only produced 59.2 dec. I use the musk ox and its whisper quiet and last a long time. Very simple to instal but its a little pricey @ 18.95 a pair. Here recently on all the bows that I build they get Moreno yarn.
Hope this helps
Shawn

I like rubber, but Dan sends me the strings that way. If he sent them to me with yarn or wool, then I'd be using that instead. I guess that's not really any help
