    Introduction

    Hi,
I am fairly new here and have made a few post and I just love this site. I have been shooting archery for almost 30 years, I made the traditional plunge about 3 years ago. Over the last 30 years I have enjoyed helping many, many people get started with compounds. I have tried to figure out traditional things on my own and Google, simply due to the fact that I don't know many folks that shoot traditional around me. I used to shoot 3D shoots a bunch, but with 4 sons playing sports it's not so easy anymore.

I love to bowhunt and have had great success bowhunting, but I am not confident enough with my longbow to hunt with. I shot a deer with a rifle for the first time in over 25 years last year. I shoot quiet a bit, some days I group, sometimes my first shot is 6 inches from bullseye. I use good follow thru with bow arm, and have a decent release (I shot fingers mostly when shooting a compound). My anchor point has issues, when I use the corner of my mouth I loose about several inches of draw length (compound 30", ear anchor 28", mouth anchor 27"). When I use my ear lobe as anchor it's fairly inconsistent at 28". My broadheads hit where my field points do consistently when I'm when I shoot well, so I believe that my bow is tuned.

My oldest son and I shot at Chester a couple years ago and if the gentleman that we shot with lived closer, I think I would be way ahead in the shooting game. He offered good advise when asked and did not try to change all up at once but was a great help. There was a man that shot traditional 20 years ago at Banana Bend that was amazing shooting traditional, his name is Josh, boy would I like to get some lessons from him. Josh's 3D score would always compare to the top finger shooters (usually top 1 or 2). Speaking of Josh, his anchor point was locked, since he's the best I've ever seen that's the way I shoot.

Thank you all for sharing your expertise on this site, I really enjoy the site! Well another page in my never ending puzzle. Thanks guys and gals...

Josh is a member here. I think his username is 4 feathers, but I'm not sure. We have probably met at Chester, too.

Thanks for the welcomes... I was definitely hoping to run across Josh on here, my brother was talking about him the other day, we had shot a few 3D shoots with him many years back.

It's funny, just right something down and you'll answer your own questions. I went out and shot and used the corner of my mouth as anchor point and put up 3 very tight groups back to back.

Deb, we may have met, I think we met half the people at Chester. What a great place, I wish they held that caliber of a shoot every weekend somewhere. lol..

Thanks... I see we're neighbors, we need to get together and shoot sometime.

Welcome. I'm curious what "his anchor point was locked" means. Can you explain?

                    Thanks,
                    Matt

P.S. Yes, I should be watching the Rangers game, but it's killing me to watch it.

I am watching the game, it's not pretty right now.

What I an talking about is holding the anchor like shooting a compound, locking the anchor in and holding it for a while and not snap shooting (for lack of better terms). Almost everyone that I've seen shoot traditional (not that many) reaches their anchor point and releases immediately. I don't know if it's right or wrong, it's just the way the best shot I've ever seen did it.

                            Welcome to the forum.

Yep, Josh Isbell is one of the best shooters around. You are correct that he has a very solid anchor. In addition to holding it (and he's holding 63#), he also uses a three or four point anchor that's exactly the same every time.

I was fortunate enough to shoot a round with Josh and Todd Smith at Holliday Creek earlier this year. I shot probably my best round ever and all three of us won our categories that round (see score link below). Of course Josh shot better. Josh is definitely good people and it was a really fun round.

I hope to meet you at one of the shoots next year. You need to try to make the Hill Country Shootout (Vanderpool) in April.

Thanks... I am definitely going to try to start shooting 3d again. I have only shot 2 3d's shooting traditional and I was lucky enough to hook up with some great people at both of them, probably some of you guys and gals. Is the Hill Country Shootout like Chester with all of the vendors and hundreds of people?
