    fletching wear

New recurve is wearing the fletching where it rides the shelf at an accelerated rate. After about 25 shots the fletching is frazzled and fuzzy.

Shelf is leather and plate is leather

Any thougths on why the acclerated wear?

I have the same issue but as long as it's flying good. Let it wear

I just noticed a similar thing on a new recurve I've been shooting. The feather wear isn't too bad, but the velcro plate is getting some noticeable rubbing...maybe feather burn?

Not sure exactly what to do about it, but the arrow seems to be flying really well.

I'd like to hear more on this.

Just for grins turn the cock feather in and see what happens. My current bow likes cock feather in to clear that hen feather.

It seems to me that something is not set up correctly, either the nock point, brace height or arrow spine is probably incorrect. Bare shafting will tell you pretty quickly what to do to get it adjusted properly. I don't think you should see fletching or shelf wear that quickly.

                  I am shooting
                  45 lb at my draw
30 inch Carbon express Heritage 90
                  145 field point
total arrow weight is 462 grains

I thought about shooting the cock feather in. The strike plate is mounted about 1/4 inch above the shelf. I wonder if he hen feather is snagging on the lower edge of the strike plate.

I may also adjust the nock point higher

Something is wrong since at 12 yds the arrow will bounce off of a standard bag target. A good indication the arrow is not striking in a straight line with the flight.

I actually prefer the shot in wear of feathers. They tend to not stack as much along the shelf or rest like fresh feathers nor be as stiff. I also can tell that my shot in feathers clean up faster than the fresh feathers do off the shot.

Just my 2 cents... Some people when I state this think I'm out of my gord but it's just what I've seen from my own rigs.

You're also going to get more shot wear off the shelf that you would from a rest due to increased service area both off the shelf and off the plate.

I've noticed that I have some wear on the outside of my fuzzy velcro rest. My arrows seem to shoot plenty straight and I have put several thousand shots across this rest. I didn't think much of it until I read this. I'm guessing in my situation it's just normal wear. What do ya'll think?

Both feather wear and shelf wear will occur with many, many shots, but the original post said his feathers are ragged after 25 shots. Something is definately out of tune. Adjusting the knock point UP may or may not be the thing to do. First you have to know if it is too low. What is the spine rating on the Carbon Express Heritage 90? You don't say what your draw length is, but assuming it is around 28", I would suspect with a 45# draw weight, a 500 spine arrow cut to the proper length and with the proper weight point would tune, or maybe a 400 if you have a very long draw length or if you use very heavy points.

                          90's are 530 spine, 9.4 gpi.

I would think that a 530 spine would work but you may have to put lighter points on them and give them a try. The arrow being 30" long is going to make them react softer and the 145 grain point will make them react even softer than that, which could be making them too soft for your set up. I think you are getting a lot of contact on the shelf for some reason.
