    Knapping material

Found some Texas Root Beer today. With hunting season about over maybe I'll have time to do some more chipping.
For those just getting started, this is kinda what to look for in easy working material.
Getting about 40lbs of this stuff and it looks pretty good from the pictures, not too much concrete inside and about the right color. Anybody that lives around DFW near me that wants to do some rock breaking, let me know and we can do a little mini knap-in.
This batch should be here next week sometime.
BTW, I'm always looking for new sources of raw material, cherts & agates.

How much does that stuff run? Our ranch is covered in it.

Anywhere from $1 to $3 a pound in small quantities depending on it's knap-ability or quality. Stuff that needs to be heat treated is on the high end if already cooked. The Root Beer requires no cooking to use.

Go out and pick some up and break it open and take a pic so I can see what you got.

I'm hoping some of that with the thicker cortex will be nice and glassy inside without much concrete inclusions because I need to knap me up some more points worthy of huntin with.

Layin around for the last 3 days with the flu and finally couldn't stand it anymore so while the sun was out I went outside this afternoon and made a big ole mess of rock chips out on the back porch. The big one is 4.5" long. I worked these out of the smaller fill rocks he put in the box to to keep the big ones from breaking during the ride on UPS. Not my best but OK for what I had to work with and got me over the cabin fever for a while.

When you come to Cowtown , I would like to see a small demostration on how you do it. I would like to give it a whirl as well. Looks like a fun.

Thats some good work there. Been trying for about 1 yr off and on and still trying to knap some good long flakes for my preform. Do you use smaller billets for the sizes that you have in your hand? Just wondering.

Here's the tools I use plus an Ishi Stick and a hammer stone and some antler,
whatever the raw material calls for. It my skill level, I have to let the rock dictate what it wants to be sorta like an Osage bow stave to a selfbow does. I am not able yet to make a rock look like something it don't want to be. The white novaculite were the first points I ever made. This stuff came with one of those beginner knapping kits---don't waste money on one. Get the full blown mega kit from these folks http://www.flintknappingtools.com/images/megak.jpg

I'll save some good rock to bring to Cowtown and maybe a biface or two

BTW, go on Youtube and look for Bohunter's knapping videos.
There are lots of how to video on knapping on Youtube. It's how I first started.
