    Arrow weight questions

I am currently shooting a 45# recurve with my total arrow weight at 357gr using a Beeman 400 spine carbon arrow 8.3 gr and a 125gr broadhead.

I am wanting to start hunting and have heard a lot about the 10 grains per pound idea. So, for me to get to the 450 weight range i need to add 100 grains.

I have been looking at the 160gr broad heads and may give them a try, but what arrow is good in the 10gr range. What spine would i start with at 45# and an 160 gr head.

I am also looking at aluminum and cedar arrows as well as carbon shafts.

any suggestions in arrow and broad head combinations would be appreciated.

I have my dad setup with CX Heritage 150's cut to about 30 inches with a 145 gr head shooting out of his Sarrels Blackhills II #46@28 - which I think his draw is a touch shorter than that but 'growing'. Total weight is right around 460gr if I remember correctly. Now, that's a LB, but it is spitting them out pretty well. It's hard to tell, but you should consider CX 150's.

Would also suggest you contact Bob, Bisch, or Deb - they're all in your area and may have some different arrows to play with before you shell out on an order.

I'm no expert by any means but you might try a 500 spine or even weaker. I don't know if your bow is cut to center or not so it might be different than mine. I shoot a couple of longbows in the 54+ lb range and have great luck with the .500s. I have some .400's too. They shoot pretty well but they are just a tiny bit on the stiff side unless I load up the weight on the tip. You can also get heavy screw in adapters so that you don't have to buy extremely heavy broadheads.

I see you are in the Austin area. I live in Killeen but I work in Austin. I may have some different weighted and spined arrows that you could try sometime to help see what works for you. What is your draw length? I draw a full 30" so my arrows may be longer than what you use.

I shoot 50#@ my draw length. My arrows are GoldTip 55/75 (.400 spine) cut to 30.5" with a 100gr brass insert and 150gr point/broadhead. These are 516gr total weight. I would say the .400 spine arrows are too stiff on a 45# bow. As barettadave said above, I would reccomend a .500 or .600 spine arrow depending on your bow and how much weight you want to add up front. As far as the 10 gpp goes, it is not a rule that you definitely have to follow or you cannot hunt. Lots of guys hunt with a little less or a little more. The main thing is that your arrow is tuned well to your bow. A well tuned light arrow will outperform a badly tuned heavy arrow almost every time.

I like shooting a very heavy arrow grains per pound (GPP) wise out of my low poundage bows which you can see in my signature. This is one reason why I shoot aluminum arrows.

Thanks for the feedback. I going to start shooting a 125gr broadhead with a 100 gr insert. So it sounds like i should get a few 500 spine arrows and see if they work.

I am not sure if my bow is cut to center or how to tell of it is cut to center.

Berretdave, i will take you up on that offer. My draw length is 28.5". I am out of town for the holiday, but will shoot you an email next week. Thanks for the offer.

              Orion,

Sure, I will be glad to help if I can. Maybe we can launch a few arrows somewhere here in Austin or something. I really don't know where the best place is locally.

I live in Georgetown which is between both of y'all. I also have an arrow pile you can pick and try from. If you want to get together in the middle let me know.

                  Bisch,

That works for me. If Orion wants to do that sometime just let me know and I'll bring several different arrows/tips etc.

I shoot a #58 Recurve with a .423 spined arrow with a total of 300 gr up front and 600 gr total. I would think you could probably use the arrow you have if you add 100 gr insert and shoot 160 gr heads. Bare shafting will tell you quick.
