    measuring string?

on my long bow with it strung, where do i measure the length at? outside to outside?

    #2
Take the string off and pull it tight and measure for actual length. There is formula for string length, Stated LB length (66"-64"-62") minus 3" i htink for LB. Bow length minus 4" for Recurve.

huntinpool has it right...actual string length is typically 3" shorter than the listed AMO Length on the bow for Longbows (66" AMO would typically be a 63" string), and 4" shorter than the listed AMO Length on the bow for Recurves (60" AMO would typically be a 56" string). It's always best to do as huntinpool suggested however and measure the string on your bow as he described. Good Luck & happy shootin'

Both of my two Blacktail recurves are 66" long. I decided to order some spare bowstrings for each of them so I called the bowyer of my bows and he said for both of my 66" recurves, the bowstrings (new) before they are strung on the bows are 62 1/2" long.

i think the bow has the wrong string on it, so when i finally twisted it enough to get the brace height correct and where it shoots good now i need to know where to measure from

Take it off without letting it untwist. Hang one end on a nail or hook and pull it as tight as possible and measure to the folded end in your hand. When you get your new string you may have to add a few twist to get the same brace height. When the brace height is the same it should be the same length. The point of getting one close is that you don't want your string twisted up a whole bunch. I usually get mine made a 1/4 shorter than needed and then I have plenty of room for twist when it stretches.

Gonna step in here... I have posted the same thing several times know. Do not take the string off the bow... if you measure from loop end to loop end (Outside - backside of the bow) it will give you a string that will be closer than one measured off the bow. As some bows like a higher brace height it is wise to measure this way. I like a brace height of around 6 3/4" which is usually far less than most so a string that is AMO usually comes in too long for me. The difference between the loops and the final string (flat as stated above) may only be 5 -10 twists of the string overall
