Usually a longbow is 3" shorter.. if the bow has 60" written on it then you would get a 57" string (AMO standards allow for the shortening of the string to allow brace)... Recurves generally are 4" shorter.
The best way to get the correct string is to brace your bow (at your correct brace height) then measure the string form loop end to loop end. Usually when you order a string based upon AMO it does not reflect the brace height that the bow performs best at.. thus it is always better to order actually measured strings. Case in point I made 3 strings for one fellow that told me his bows was 60" AMO and was a recurve - he shot 3 under so I made them up and sent them off... They were 56" actual measured but, when he got them they were 1/2" too short . I replaced them for him even though it was not my responsibility. When I get an order for skinny strings (high performance strings) I make them with very few twists ...if the bow takes a longer string it will be too short.
