    Officially entered the trad area

I have a couple of older recurves that I have played with but never gotten serious about. Well, I went and bought a brand new bow and think I'm gonna get serious about it.

I bought a Hoyt Durado 50# bow. Its the camo one.

I guess my first question would be.....I have several Axis 400 arrows that I have been shooting out of my other recurve. Will these work for me out of the new one or do I need to be shooting something else? I shoot a 28.5" DL Mathews Drenalin but with a very low anchor point which makes my DL a little longer than true DL. I'm guessing with my anchor point shooting a recurve.....27.5" or so.

All help is greatly appreciated. I haven't even strung the bow yet.

Sounds like 400's are over spined for that weight. Try some 500's or other lighter spine and tune them to your bow. It won't hurt to shoot the 400's , you just won't get the accuracy.

You just need to shoot a few and you will see if they will work. Stare at a spot and shoot , if they hit left of where you are looking they are too stiff, Right and they are too weak. You can always add point weight to weaken an arrow up some or take some weight off to stiffen. You want the arrow to shoot where you are looking though. Tuning is crucial and there are only a few tools to work with on Trad equipment. Get it shooting straight and you will see better and more consistant groups from the start. This willl also give you more confidence in your shot.

x2 on just shooting them and see how they fly. If the nock-end does not wiggle all over the place, they may work. When I dropped my wheelie from 70 to 60# and shortened the draw length from 29 to 28 + a D loop, I found my Carbonwood 3000 arrows I shoot in my 54# recurve fly perfectly from my compound, so it should be vice-versa.

What you may find is although the draw weight is 10# less than your compound, the last 6" of draw use your real deltoid (shoulder) muscles that the compound does not since the cams (or cam in the case of your bow) have already reduced the draw weight. I have found that trad archery is 10% equipment and 90% shooting form, so if you get tired your form and anchor point will go in the ****er really fast, and bad habits are easier to avoid than break.

Set up the Hoyt and shot a few last night. The 400 Axis flew pretty well. I need alot of practice. I haven't shot a recurve in a long time. I believe I am shooting 100gr. points out of them now but will have to weigh them to confirm.

              Next question:

I was shooting at 15yds and my groups were consistantly 10" above where I'm looking/aiming. What now?

Buy the Masters of the Bare Bow series and start learning what some good shooters do....then find what works best for you.

If you can find a local trad shoot, hit it! A little time spent with some good shooters can be very productive!...do it before you start to develop bad habits, they will be tougher to break the more you ingrain them into your shooting.

Shot a few this evening. Trying to decide if I'm gonna shoot 2 n 1 or 3 under. 3 under seems to work for me. This raised the back of the arrow and put me on target. Shot last 4 arrows into 8" at 30yds...and they were all centered on bull.

I'm shootin a 50#@28" Bear Kodiak Hunter, drawing about 27"-27.5", and I'm using a 500 spine cut to 28 1/4" with a 200gr point and they are flying very well for me. Don't know how a Kodiak Hunter would compare to a Hoyt Durado performance wise though.

                    Good Luck!!!
