Hey guys,
I am sorry I missed the Hill Country Shootout. It means a lot you noticed that I was not there. I intended to go, but something came up.
You know I am all about helping new hunters, and especially kids...well about a year ago a co-worker told me that his son wanted to be a hunter. We talked and I told him some thing to get the little guy started. His dad had taken an antelope when he lived in N.M. but was not really a hunter.
Well the young man, Trace, got a pellet gun and in the months that followed bagged about a dozen squirrels and a dove or two. I told his dad that he needed a real gun and that when he got proficient and safe...I would take him pig hunting.
I was hoping we could go for the special turkey youth season, but custody problems between the parents (divorced) kept that from happening. This weekend was the only one that would work. I took them to my deer lease. I could take 2 turkeys and hogs for my share of the lease so I put the dad out with a barrowed 30/30, and I set with Trace with his single shot .243 and stayed with him for his first hunt ever.
To make a long story shorter, He is an amazing shot for a 10 year old. They both got turkeys and Trace also got a nice pig. I got a decent video of the whole thing and it just couldn't have went better.
I missed the Shootout and will try to make Chester, but if comes down to a chance to take a kid or shoot for myself.....I will probably do the same again.
Thanks for missing me, it means a lot to me.
