well im going to start of by saying pics are coming tomorrow, but this past weekend when i was hunting at KJO Keith said he had a longbow in his closest his buddy gave him but it was right handed and being that hes a lefty he offered to sell it. well im not sure what model she is but she had tiger strip maple riser and limbs with the limbs stained an almost dark walnut look. the riser also had cocobolo and a strip of bubinga it looks like... but she was all scratched up and the finish was peeling... well i got her for a bargain and brought her home and started with 100grit then150 then220 finishing with 320 while being carful not to remove to much beyond the finish.... 8 coats of finish later and a new rest she is strung and stunning!!! i would give her a 15 on a scale of 1-10.
after that episode, i turn my sights to my recurve ive been shooting the past 7 years... now ive grown quite attached to her feel most comfortable shooting her so this was very nerve wrecking, i just hoped i didnt screw anything up. well while the Chek-mate recurve i like so much had this riser ive just always thought should have it shape tweaked, so i did it.
i got out the drill press threw on a drum sander and went to work i gave her the curves she deserved and did what i thought would work to balance the riser cosmetically and structurally. then, i advanced to my series of sand papers and finishing. originally she had a flat finish that i felt like didnt give the wood figure and grain justice so i gave her a semi gloss finish...
anyways the bows are back shooting and looking better then when i first got them.
pictures to come tomorrow
