Savage Axis II Precision vs Ruger Precision

Is there really $600 difference between these 2 guns?

I’ve shot several savage rifles and all have been very accurate by nature. Having a tough time convincing myself that the Ruger is $600 better….

Tell me why I am wrong.

I might be wrong, but the Savage is just the Axis receiver and barrel in an MDT Oryx chassis, I think you could piece it together yourself even cheaper by buying the chassis if you already have a Savage Axis rifle. While the RPR is its own proprietory components. Its receiver is only used with that platform. I'm sure that the Savage should shoot well and be cheaper, but the overall fit and finish is going to be better on the RPR.

I’m not a big fan of either, but if you are stuck on those two options, hands down the RPR. The Axis is garbage IMO.

For what the RPR costs, I think there are better options out there. I’d buy a Bergara or Tikka and drop it in the chassis of your choice. I think Bergara makes a B14 that’s comes in a chassis from the factory as well.

The Savage .308 I have is pretty good. Shoots sup MOA with 175gr easy enough. Sits nice in a Bog pod too. I have a 4-12x Burris Euro scope on it. The Euro model is not available here in usa. It was made for the european market and has better glass I am told.

I’m not stuck on either, and honestly it wasn’t a consideration at all until I saw an Sig cross in the classified that I wish I had acted faster on.

Thanks for the feedback, I have more homework to do and in no really hurry to get something

I didn’t think about the Cross. I haven’t shot one, but handled one a few months ago and it seemed like a pretty nice rifle. Quality was a lot better than the RPR imo. No comparison between the Cross and an Axis.

tell you you're wrong? ok you're wrong! RPR's are junk ! my 308 was only able to shoot .67" 4 shot group at 400 yards with crappy winchester soft point ..
my 260... well that one's not stock so it doesn't really count.

Frankly, i only buy them because the stock folds ..

The savage precision comes with a heavy barrel.

I don't have any experience with the Ruger but my Savage Axis 2 with the hardwood stock in 22-250 shoots good. I've killed prairie dogs and jackrabbits out to 400 yards with it. My buddy has the one with the synthetic stock in .223 and it shoots good. I just like the more solid stock on mine. For a truck gun or dedicated huntin gun I'd choose the plastic stock so it wouldn't matter as much if it got dinged or scratched up.

One thing with savages, even the cheap crappy fit/finish and feeling Axis is that they shoot. More times than not, they shoot great. From the cheapest axis to the most expensive they sell, every time I have dealt with one they shot MOA or better. The RPR will beat out the Axis in fit and finish usually, but I haven’t handled the Axis Precision to compare.

I have a 1st generation RPR in 6.5 and I love it. Is it a $4000+ custom gun? No. But it’s extremely accurate, especially if I’m having a good day, and feels well built. I beta tested the timney trigger when they came out with it, and that was a solid upgrade for it. Other than that, it’s a stock rifle and shoots fantastic.

I was very surprised at the accuracy of the Axis .223 Stainless I have. Never would have bought one. Won it in a raffle. Shot it a bit, liked what I saw. The stock was junk as was the trigger bad also. Put a Boyds on it, EGW rail, Warne Maxima rings and a Leupold Rifleman in 3-9x40. Upgraded the bolt handle. Polished up the trigger and sear. Cut 1.5rings off the trigger spring(4.5lbs now). This gun is a shooter! 1.5" groups at 100yds. Simple upgrades made this gun feel totally different. The Axis is a economy grade rifle. But with a few improvements, it can shoot just as good as most factory rifles.
The Ruger American has a better stock, but it still feels cheap to me. I like that the Rugers come threaded. Wish the Savages were coming threaded.
I don't think you can go wrong with either brand.
