    Winchester Model 100 Help needed

I inherited a Winchester Model 100 Semi Auto in .308. The S/N shows year of manufacture as 1962. The problem is when you pull back the action it locks in the open position and will not release. I have to remove magazine to make it close. I have looked online for replacement magazines with no luck thinking the magazine could be the problem. Any ideas on the cause of the problem. Thinking of possibly selling or trading and want to get it in working order. Thanks!!

Will it feed ammo if the magazine is loaded ? I know what one is but I’m not familiar with how the 100 works because I’ve never owned one. It doesn’t seem like that’s the way it’s supposed to work.

I have yet to take it to the Range and try to shoot it. I understand the this model has a known flaw with the extractor. May have to take it to a Gunsmith.

Most semi autos automatically lock back on an empty magazine. You don't need to go to the range. Just cycle it by hand with 1 in the mag. It should cycle the first and then lock when the mag is empty.

The trick to loading that 100 is put 5 rounds in the magazine And pull and hold the bolt open. Insert the magazine and release the bolt. It won’t accept the magazine with 5 rounds in it with the bolt closed. I hunted with one for years. Have 2 magazines. Deer hunting from a stand, I just put 4 in the magazine and inserted it after getting the stand. Spot n stalk hog hunting, both mags full. First one went in the pipe when I left the truck.

This is the way. Do not be surprised when you get to the range of you can’t get it to group very well. I have 2 and with high quality hand loads I can get no better than 2 inch groups at 100 yards. They both work great for most Texas game but super accurate they are not. They are fun to shoot though.

No need to feel that way… I’ve never liked that setup… Some old timers told me about 88 magazines…

Just a Side Note: I called Winchester this morning concerning the firing Pin Recall replacement. I gave them the serial number and she told me it was replaced in 2003 in Tyler, Texas by an authorized Gunsmith. I know that is legit because that is where the gun would have been in that year. She told me to fire away!!
