    Solar Plus System

Has anyone here installed this at their primary residence or Camp or second home? Trying to find out more about this mainly as a backup system for when power goes out. My first thought would be how long do the batteries last as I’m sure they aren’t cheap. Bandera Electric is showing $25-$30,000 for a home system. This would be for a second home in hill country. And how much do you normally get from provider per KWH for excess electricity to help pay for system?

I don’t know about this particular system, but my understanding with solar/ battery systems is that if you want it for backup you can’t tie it into the grid. They don’t want your system feeding power back into the grid when the power is out and frying an unknowing electrician working on a line.

The way I understood it was the two options are

    A. Have your solar system tied into the grid and get paid to provide your excess electricity to the grid. The downside is your power still goes out when everyone else’s does.

    B. Don’t tie your system to the grid. You are no longer dependent on the grid and your power never goes out but you don’t get paid for the excess you produce either.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

If you are wanting a backup you can beat the $30K by two thirds with a Generac generator. Never would I depend on solar for anything other than a feeder battery or an electric gate. My two cents.

I agree here unless you just have money to burn on a solar system. Generac wit a propane tank is what we have for backup and we live in a very rural area.

Okay, have Generac at home on natural gas. Last time I checked a 250gallon propane tank didn’t last long when running round the clock

Signature Solar has some nice off grid kits that are in the $15-$20k range. They’ve also got a hybrid inverter that allows you to use the batteries or backfeed the grid, however I’ve heard of some serious issues on that particular unit and would hold off until the bugs have been worked out.

Signature Solar provides solar panels & components and full kits for off-grid, grid-tie and custom diy solar systems.
