One of my buddies has killed way more deer with a .243 than my other buddy that shoots a 300WSM. Problem being my buddy that shoots the 300WSM is scared of the gun. He mostly just hits dirt.
The author of that article is absolutely a journalist and not a avid hunter. You can tell by the wording he uses to describe certain items in the article.
Yessir. Very easy to tell. AND, in the title he says it IS the best caliber...but his last sentence says it's one of the best calibers. Which is it??
Reading through this thread I also learned that high fence places don't have brush, and a 243 won't kill a deer over 120 lbs.
Anyone with a functioning brain knows the .280 Rem is the absolute best of all time deer cartridge. Just ask anyone named Barclay ! BTW, I agree.
Seriously, I used to see the kids section of a western hunting mag that showed pics of all the antelope, mulies, and elk the youngsters killed. Lots of them killed with a .243, .257 Roberts, and .25-06. You would think it was the shooter and not the cartridge that made the difference.
The cartride makes ALL the diff!! IMHO I used to use a 30-06 and now back to a .270 But the 06 was a very lethal round even at distance, then with Remington acclelerators she was good to hundreds of yards+ Won a bet with it from one canyon wall to the next in a box canyon in Senora - hit a Turkey 1 shot 1 kill! Canyon hunting requires a lethal round - my Dad waited while a buck climbed up and on top of a canyon wall - right through the shoulders with a 7 MM Mag. but got his back legs under him and off the canyon wall he went!! Lost the bet for most points as he broke one side off on the way down!! We still harvested him - was just pretenderized!! LOL!
