    Caliber Dilema

Here in Iowa you need .35 to .50 caliber to deer hunt.

So a 350 Legend will work, I can find ammo on the shelf for it in some stores
450 Bushmaster will work as well other stores stock that
45-70 works too, I can find that on shelves.

Knowing that all those cartridges seem to have a max effective range of approximately 200 yds I am wondering if there's a .35 caliber cartridge that I can use out to say 600 yds.
I dont plan on shooting that far, but you never know.

My self dictated rule is bow inside 30 yds rifle is inside 300. However that's not etched in stone.

What am I going to use it on? Killing stuff [emoji23][emoji56]

Where am I going to be using it? North America mostly Midwestish, for now.

    I've got .308 & 6.5 laser beam [emoji56]. I can't use them here 'cause they're not .35 caliber

I don't know of a long range 35 but you could jump up to a 375 H&H, 375 Ruger, or the 375 Cheytac.

50bmg comes to mind. I have a 375 h&h and you'd probably have to aim at the moon to get a hit at 600yds. Lol

35 Whelen with 225gr bullets is a no brainer to 300 yards and with carefully tested dope you can easily stretch that to 400. Known as the poor man's 375 H&H but without as much recoil. https://www.ronspomeroutdoors.com/bl...n%20projectile.
Make it 35 Whelen AI and stretch it another 50 yards.

Don't the cartridges have to be straight walled?

            I could see that, haha.

Interesting article - near the bottom it states that some of the newer, aerodynamic bullets stay super sonic to 1100 yards.

Handloading this cartridge king of versatility turns it into the most capable hunting cartridge on the planet.

              I'm not entirely 100% sure
Here's a screenshot from the regulations.
Is it says straight wall OR other centerfire.......

Than a couple sentences down it says during youth, disabled, 1st & 2nd shotun season....
              General sesson isn't mentioned.....

.375H&H is the medium bore version of the .30-06. With modern powders and bullets, you can get a trajectory that's very easy to shoot out to 300 yards. With cup and core bullets, it will be effective out to 600 yards. This is true of the modern .375s also. A .375 will be a better choice than a .358 caliber due to bullet selection.

Yep, looks like they changed the regs.

Is ammo semi readily available for the .375's and other cartridges mentioned?

The .50 is like what $5-$6 bucks around?
I know that a 300wsm will jellify Texas Deer @ 100 yards curious what a .50 will do....

I just looked it up and doesn't have to be a straight walled cartridge. I think the 35 whelen would be the ideal round to use up there.

You'll be throwing it in the gut pile.

I would think with the Iowa restrictions that some mentioned ammo would be available there.
