    Barrel GS identification

Probably a long shot. I picked a cz 527 that was originally a 22hornet and was rebarreled to a 17 ackley hornet. I purchased the rifle from the son of the original owner and after it was rebarreled he got very I’ll and passed so it was never shot. Son ended up finding the dies and sent them to me and are also brand new never used. The barrel has no markings other then caliber but the son believes it was done by someone here in dfw but the son is also an older gentleman so he couldn’t tell me who did the work. The following pic is the only markings on the barrel. Was contemplating setting it back to just the 17HH.

    Any help is appreciated.

17k is a really neat little round...I would fire form some brass & see how the reloads group before I would think about changing anything.

You may want to pull the stock to see if there are any other markings on the bbl not visible.

unless that barrel has markings elsewhere, it's gonna be one of the following makers: Shilen, Lilja, Wilson, PacNor, or Douglas. The 17 Ackley Hornet engraving was done with a Hermes Pantograph machine using cursive font. Personally, I'd leave it as-is; however, I'm a huge Ackley fan and reload for all my rifles.

That rifle likely cost around $1400 to build and dies are around $250

Bob Green out of York, PA built dozens of that set-up (CZ527 17 AH)

I have lots of load data I can share: this will get you started ... https://www.slideshare.net/enganche1...et-alex-clarke

10.5 ~ 12.0 grs of powder under a 20 gr Vmax will put you in the 3600-3750 fps range

I checked the whole barrel and I’m assuming it’s probably a Lija barrel as I compared it to a buddies cooper 22-250 barrel from lilja and it is same text same place and same exact crown. Just a wild guess tho. I will be forming some brass this weekend and checking it out. Thank-you for the link Blake I greatly appreciate the information.

Thanks again guys I will update hopefully Sunday see what she prints.

Bore scope it and might give a clue. If it's Shilen it may well be 4 groove ratchet rifling. If single point cut rifling it might be one of the other premium brands.

I have a 527 in 17 Rem and love that little rifle.
I vote to keep as is also.

                Don’t rebarrel it! That’s a sweet rifle.

Dang, that would be sweet. I love those CZs, but then a custom heavy barreled 17 Ackley Hornet, that would be nice to own. I want to build something like that at some point. I would not do anything, other than load ammo and shoot it.

Lilja doesn’t offer drop-in barrels for a 527 and they don’t do re-barreling for customer actions. The font and crowning are coincidental since they’re both popular options offered by GS’s. It could still be a Lilja barrel but they didn’t fit, chamber, and crown it. A bore scope of the grooves and lands will narrow it down to barrel maker. Regardless, that cartridge and setup should shoot tiny groups

I was trying to borescope it yesterday but unfortunately I have one of them amazon borescopes that only goes down to 22 caliber. And yes sir I pulled out all my 22hornet brass and been sorting it for forming. I probably won’t anneal the brass the first batch of 15-20 see how that goes. I’ll update by this weekend
