    Barrel "break in" ?

Anything I need to do other than clean periodically after shooting ?

Always heard you need to do a barrel "break in". But no idea what that consists of, lol.

Gun prob won't be shot 10 rds a year (prob less) after initial sight in.

    Savage Axis II .25-06. Nib.

Just be a hunting rifle. No 1000 yard bell ringing in the plans.

    Thanks, D.

Clean it & go shoot...no need for a break in.

Just shoot it. Some of the ridiculous break-in procedures that include cleaning the barrel 317 times do way more harm than good 90% of the time IMO.

D, let me save you the headache. I'll give ya $200 for the rifle. Then you won't have to worry about it anymore.

Velocities will settle/stabilize between 15-50 rounds depending on barrel.

I found some of the barrel break in procedures to be crazy. Do they work? Heck if I know. I have rifles I did a break in procedure on, and rifles I didn’t. All shoot great. So who knows.

As stated above, I have ran a break in procedure on some, others I havent. I have shooters on both sides of the isle.
Main thing is to not over heat the barrel. Shoot a couple of shots, let it cool, clean it. Experiment with different ammo. Your rifle will shoot some better than others.

Christensen recommends it. My son has a Mesa 6.5 CM and I have a Mesa LR 6.5 PRC. Both are sub moa. We broke them in following Christensen’s instructions. It seems the used rifles I’ve bought shoot better than my new ones. Did the previous owner break them in? All in all I think there must be something to breaking in the barrel.

I read somewhere that the “break in” was designed by barrel makers so you can burn a barrel faster and be in the market sooner for a new one. Just shoot it and clean it once in a while…
