    New Muzzle Loader

Finally had to give up on my old CVA Mountain Rifle with iron sights---these old eyes just can't cut it. Bought a CVA break-action .50 cal and mounted a very old (50 yrs +) Bushnell 2.5x with post and crosshair reticle on it. Went to the range today, and after doing a zero in the shop to be sure I was on the paper, started shooting at 25 yds. First shot is the one at 6 0'clock, two more shots after scope adjustments (one went the wrong direction) and the one-holer at 9 O'clock was the final 3 shots. I quit at this point as I was satisfied it was going to shoot. I'll be back out in a while to finish the zero at 50 yds--hogs and deer be warned! And, I was surprised--recoil is about like a .30-06.

They are alot of fun. And adds a good time to be in the woods to kill a mature deer that hid all season

My son has a CVA like you described, and I borrowed it to kill a doe in the muzzy season. I was surprised at what a good trigger it had. I need to sell my muzzy barrel for the Encore and get a CVA. The breach plug removal by hand is a bonus.

What load are you shooting ?

Dry creek—these were 3 pellets of White Hot pushing a 265-gr bullet.

Well I was wrong about the bullet weight. It is a 295-gr Powerbelt hollowpoint. It is listed on the package as Item #AC1598. I also have some Hornady 385-gr Great Plains lead HPs that I will try next trip.

I have had my best accuracy with two pellets.

That will be a part of my continued testing, although I see more than good enough accuracy so far with 3.

My son was shooting Powerbelts also, but I don’t know what weight. I tried several bullets in my Encore and the Powerbelts had the best groups. I wasn’t too impressed with how they held together but I killed everything I ever shot with them. Mostly does when we were trying to cull our doe herd at the last of the season. Thanks for the info !

Honestly, I never found the need for more than two, as well.

Which CVA did you get, OP?

Mine is an Accura and shoots at MOA with two pellets and PowerBelt bullets. I tend to shoot the lighter ones though.

I used pellets in my muzzleloaders for years, but I’ve switched to loose powder and get better accuracy for whatever reason. I killed a doe during ML season with 60 grains Triple 7 and 350 gr cast lead bullet in a Harvester black crush rib sabot. I got 2 inch groups at 75 yards shooting open sights. 75 yards is my max range shooting open sights.

I have a Wolf, but not the V2. Will put three shots in a clover leaf at 100yds.
