    Gunsmith for rebarrel

    Good evening,

I have my Dad's old Mauser 98 that needs a new barrel. It is currently in 7mm Rem Mag and I'm not sure if I'd want to change, but open to suggestions. I wouldn't mind a 270 or 280, but concerned about magazine feed. I know the bolt face would have to be changed. Can anyone recommend a reputable gunsmith in the Lockhart, Luling, Gonzales or Seguin area?

BJ Lunsford could possibly do it, he's in Kingsbury if I remember correctly. You'll have to go with a magnum caliber due to the bolt face.

Kingsbury is close. I'll try to find him. I'm sure I could find a Mauser bolt that hasn't been opened up for a magnum face. I just don't need a magnum since I primarily hunt here in Texas and shots are 650 yards or less. Thanks for the info.

I’m a .280 guy myself but a 7mm mag excels at longer ranges. Just saying.

280AI actually has factory ammo available if you look hard enough as a back up to handloading.

You can always load down the 7mag and keep the original chambering if it’s sentimental to you.

Could also go with a SAUM type case for long seated bullets

          Sierracharlie out....

Well, the rifle was originally chambered in 7x61 Sharpe/Hart, but dad couldn't find casings anymore, so he had it reamed into 7mm Rem Mag. My uncle had the rifle made for my Dad when he was stationed in Germany in the late 50's. There is no telling how many thousands of rounds have been shot thru it, but it won't hold a group anymore which is the reason for re-barrel. So, the sentimental value is the looks of the rifle and I'm sure I can get a barrel with the same basic profile. I'm not against 7mm Rem Mag as I've seen it land hundreds of game,,,,easily.
Thanks all for the comments. Tim

Yup! Right down the road from you! Bj Lunsford 830 491 8887 I’ve not used him but a very good friend of mine uses him for his f class rifles. I’ve spoke to him about some stuff and he sounds like a good ol boy. He’s on FM1150
