    It’s useful again

Finally got around to making my Saker 556 useful again. The Trifecta mount had been carbon locked on for years, so I just left it dedicated to that rifle. Decided to run the Saker in direct thread configuration (for length and weight purposes) on my sons 17 WSM. Been running a SilencerCo Sparrow I purchased a couple years before this one, but wanted a bit more volume for it. This was the 4th rifle can SilencerCo ever sold to the public. A handful more hit the streets as gifts and demo cans to a few select individuals that were close with the company at the time.

0004! Wow, that’s pretty neat! How was the blast baffle holding up?

I’m assuming surprisingly well. The can is right at 10 years old and has thousand upon thousands of rounds on it. Mostly on a 11.5” 556. I took a carbon scraper to the flash hider after taking this picture to get to the actual metal. The flash hider was perfect other than being caked with carbon. I didn’t take the scraper to the blast baffle before reassembling with the direct thread mount, but I did thoroughly look at. It looked identical to the flash hider, and didn’t see any signs of erosion. I’d have to scrape it clean to be sure though.

It’s been a great can, but I wouldn’t purchase it again it again today. My main complaint against it is the first round pop, which is typically when I need it to be the quietest. Subsequent shots are dang near as quiet as anything else out there today. Take down is simple and easy. It was a fantastic can for it’s time, and still a great option today. Just there are slightly better options for the money. I think the dumbest thing SilencerCo did rimfire wise was take away the Spectre II. Slightly cheaper than the Sparrow, just as durable, and no first round pop. It’s been gone for 5-6 years though unfortunately.

A suggestion on cleaning those things, you might try some carb cleaner. I use carb cleaner to break up carbon, in various places. Not sure how well it would work in a suppressor. My first thought when I saw all of that carbon, was carb cleaner.

Any suggestions for a cheaper 22lr can? I have a dead air mask, but my brother in law is thinking about getting one. Buddy of mine has a Warlock 2 and likes it.

Man I don’t. I checked prices earlier and just realized the Mask has gone up and the Sparrow down. They both used to be $399. At $329 the sparrow is about as good of a deal as can be found on a mag rated 22 can. I’ve got a Warlock as well, and I actually prefer it to the sparrow if magnum rated isn’t a necessity. It’s the exact same can as the Spectre II I mentioned earlier, but an aluminum version. The Spectre was stainless.

Not worried about it being clean. I only scraped the flash hider clean just to see if there was any erosion underneath. Only curiosity sake that has now been satisfied. Typically I see no reason to clean cans, and this isn’t an exception. However if I did clean it I would use a supersonic cleaner with the dip mixture.

It's good to see SiCo's products holding up well. I bought an Omega a couple years ago and I love it (direct thread)

How much weight and length do you think you saved? I've got a 10 year old Saker556 (they must have been cranking them out, because my serial number is a lot higher) that just sits attached to the same rifle and gets little use because of the weight. I'm almost positive I have the old Trifecta MAAD mount on that one and an older Saker762.

Not a ton, but enough to justify it especially since I was really using the cam otherwise. Shaved just over an inch off the total length, but I didn’t weight it before and after. I did hold the two mounting devices in my hand at the same time though, and I would say easily several ounces if not more. Not only is the mount lighter, but you also lose the need for flash hider/brake on the rifle.

Mask on the far left, Saker 556 in the middle, and Sparrow on the right.

If you are running lots of rounds through them I would certainly clean them-- seen 70 to 100 grams of extra carbon build up inside heavily used M4 suppressors.
