    Trigger upgrade Springfield XDM

This fall I met a fellow elk hunting here in Montana where we retired who had a 5-yard encounter with a griz sow. He was on a trail bowhunting and got on between the sow and her cub. They both backed off and it did not attack. What’s concerning is this occurred less than 10 miles from our house in the Tobacco Roots Mountains.

This off-season I’m upgrading my 10mm XDm. I had carried it in.Blackhawk serpa holster on my pack’s hip belt, and got a Diamond D cross chest holster. I shoot Buffalo Bore Dangerous Game. Too big to be my edc.

I have a set of True Glo TFO’s ordered and a local gunsmith has the jig to push them in. With the cross chest holster I ruled our adding a light or optics.

Last I’m considering the Powder River Precision drop-in trigger kit to reduce pre and post travel and reduce the pull weight to 4 to 5 pounds (no lower, this is not a range gun).

Anybody have experience with the PRP kit? There’s 3 options on replacing actual trigger- a slightly wider polymer trigger, an aluminum trigger (both curved) or upgrade to a straight trigger. Any opinions?

Not on a XDM, but have replaced triggers in a few of mine with other mfgs. Ghost and Zev on my Glocks, and most recently a M-CARBO on a Ruger. As to trigger type, I think a lot depends on where the pad of your finger falls. And your personal preference.

Your buddy is very fortunate that sow didn't charge. I would have expected her to.

      Thanks for comments.

I saw what I think was one of her yearlings during the 2021 bow season. It walked 60 yards upwind from me I was sitting in pine trees above a wallow. We ‘locals’ know the areas she lives/ travels and she has a new cub every year. When I meet out of state hunter, I always spend a couple minutes talking about griz, where we see them and give them my opinion on how to deal with them. I sure don’t want to hear somebody got mauled. Plus- the GWs will close that area until the bear is found and dispatched.

A friend and I each have a Powder River kit on a .45 XDM Match 5.25. They are very nice upgrades. I have the 2.5 lb. one and it's almost too light.. He has the next one up from that, whatever it's supposed to be, 3.5 0r 4 pounds, and it is great. Probably the one I should have gotten. I put a 24 lb. spring in mine, and it usually sees .45 Super handloads around the farm here. I have 10mm pistols, too, the .45 Super is pretty much on a performance level with them. I stayed with the factory trigger profile, it works fine for me.

Thanks, good info. I wouldn’t be getting the lower weight springs.

On the PRP web site you could order the other springs and there’s YouTubes on how to install them.

All done now- PRP drop-in trigger is installed. It took me a few hours since I was checking YouTube and took my time.

It provided a much nicer trigger than factory with big reductions in trigger shoe pre and post travel, and the trigger is still around 4-5#. I need to borrow a measuring tool to see exactly what it is. The available competition trigger kit’s springs gets it down around 3#.

TFOs are bright in daylight and glow well in the dark. I prayed I’m never trying to get them on a griz coming in the dark.

I upgraded to a stainless guide rod and 23# Wolff spring. I have not noticed much if any recoil difference with 170 grain target loads- I haven’t shot the Buffalo Bore rounds yet to comment.

I decided to ‘close the hole’ on my Diamond D to keep out any dirt when I’m hunting. I carved a wine cork to shape and thinned to 1/4” and contact cemented rattlesnake skin. My Buck 110 belt holster fits where the back strap connects.

A 22# Wolff recoil spring, the factory spring is 18#. I did not install the heavier striker spring that was included from Wolff. PRP said it was not needed and increased the trigger pull weight.

If somebody has moderate or above mechanical skills, the trigger upgrade is doable. I did not polish the sear surfaces, Daniel the owner of PRP strongly discouraged my doing it.

If anybody has a use for the factory sights and trigger shoe, let me know and I'll drop it in the mail. I was thinking one day (hopefully far in the future) our son will be asking himself why did Dad keep all these old XD parts?
