    6MM Build

Has anyone built a 6mm off a Remington Model 7 action? I am in the process of pulling the trigger on converting a Model 7 7mm-08 into a 6mm. If you have, what material did you go with? This is what I am planning on going with right now.

    - Remington Model 7
    - McMillan Game Warden stock
    - 20" Heavy Palma contour barrel
    - Trigger Tech Primary

Anyone build anything similar? How did it come out?

    6mm what ? BR, 6mmRem, 6CM ... ?

I'd do the 6CM and not look back. a 6BR would be insanely fun and boringly accurate with ragged 1-hole groups all day long

regarding the 6mm Rem - here's the question you need to ask yourself.... what twist barrel and what weight bullets do you intend to use.

The loading/ejecting port on a Mod 7 is approximately 2.625" long .... which is a 1/4" longer than the standard SA port. 6mm Rem builds using a fast twist barrel and 105/108 gr bullets seated long often times won't eject (live round) from the chamber of a SA receiver. With a Mod 7 , it's gonna be real close as you may be fine if you don't seat bullets to long.

Model 7's are sweet as I've owned a few custom builds. Before venturing into this project, get some 6mm Rem loaded rounds and see if they eject and feed properly. If you only intend to shoot 65grs to 100 grs out of a 1:10 twist, you should be fine.

the 6CM has better brass and will outshoot the 6mmRem all day long

I should have clarified; it will be a 6CM.

I would have the action / bolt trued and blueprinted.

FYI - a Rem SA only weighs 2 more ounces than a Mod 7 , with the added benefit of tons of aftermarket accessories. You're limited with a Mod 7 especially DBM bottom metal.

Th action is a donor action off another rifle I currently have that has sat in the safe for a few years, figured I would do something with it.

I plan on having the action blueprinted.

Don’t do it. I don’t care if they pay you to build that 7 action. Biggest **** mistake I’ve ever made was building a “cheap” model action that I scored. Nothing fits them, aftermarket for them sucks, and they retain value about as well as a Dodge. I had to wait forever for a stock I liked (14 months) trigger options sucked, and when the stock came in wrong I didn’t have any options but to wait again or live with it. To top it all off I sold the **** thing ( trued model 7, Manners EH1, Timney special run flat trigger, Bartlein Varmint contour, with Badger bottom metal) for $1000 because nobody wants a dam* Model 7.

My advice is sell the donor rifle for $700-800 and buy a Zermatt Origin action for $800 on a 700 footprint. I know of 6-7 of us that all built 7s at that same time because we scored them for sun $200. Every single one of us regrets them.

              Solid advice as usual

I appreciate the advice. Did you build it yourself or did you have a gunsmith do it? Once it was all complete, did it not shoot well or what was the reasoning behind selling it?

I'm not discrediting what you're saying, you actually have my attention but that is the first I have heard about the model 7.

Clayton at West Texas Ordnance will be building it and he said he builds on them all the time and never had an issue.

It shot great. Had an identical build to it at the same time that a buddy had built by the same smith (Texas Custom Rifles). We took it out to 1540 yds on a perfect day with roughly 50% hit rate. As usual I grew tired of it and wanted to move onto something else. Jonathon (Clayton’s oldest smith at WTO) built one at the same time as we did. He’s a good buddy of ours. His shot great as well, but it was on WTOs reamer. Jonathan was the only one I remember not regretting building it on a Model 7, but that might have something to do with their on hand parts availability.
