    Texas in state Elk Hunters???

Has anyone hunted free range low fence elk in Texas? Any luck? Any public herds accessible? Looking to firearm hunt a large bull(s) in Texas. How much cooler space is needed for meat, hide head? Best time of year? And yes this may be a pipe dream.

No public land huntable heard however you can kill them in west Texas with a nice size check around $15-20k from what i have found.

This and honestly it’s a good thing. Protect the herd.

no public land access which is why it is not a game animal in Texas. They are all on large private ranches. I have shot 3. 2 good and one so-so but was an invite.

back in 2023 for a monster.

best time to kill a MONSTER is as soon as they rub out. You will sweat your bag off but they will be easy to find.

I have found two private land hunts on the same ranch that are about 1/2 the fees you quoted. I have known the guide for 20-25 years in other business dealings. He is watching three 7X7 and a lot of mature 6X6 on game cameras.

6000 acres, landowner allowing 2 elk, 2 milieus and 2 whitetail this year. Must hunt with his guides. That’s okay with this 60 yo man.

Thanks, you have confirmed what I have found. Thanks for the info. I’ve booked both Elk hunts for a buddy and myself for late Sept/early October.

There is one slim change for an opportunity, if you get drawn thru Texas Draw Hunt for mule deer out in West Texas at Sierra Diablo WMA, according to the web site they would allow "one elk either sex". The opportunity would be like winning the loto!

I know of someone who was able to kill a nice 5x5 bull on only 54 acres near Mountain Home.

A lot more free range elk in west Texas than people think, and there are quite a few 350 plus bulls killed every year.
Several of the WMAs have elk, and if you are drawn for a mule deer tag they will usually let you shoot any elk you see.
Now til mid October is best time to hunt them. Rut should be kicking off.

Good luck on your hunt op. Post some pictures.

This was pretty close to the offer I had a couple years ago. Ranch was 250k and had a good herd. They shot 4 a year for 2 years till the ranch sold all over 330
