    Long Range Shooting

Looking to get into long range shooting and want some help. Looking to spend under 2k on a rifle build. Wondering if there are places to get lessons? I already posted on another thread but was told to post here too. Thanks

Where are you located? A good factory rifle, ammo, and glass is doable under $2k.

If you are in DFW I will have a very solid recommendation for a gentleman who does excellent classes (roughly 200 rds) out to 800 yards.

It's going to be really tough/near impossible to build a rifle for $2k, even before optics. Alamo Precision Rifles has some of the best prices out there, and their entry level rifles are starting around $2,600 I believe.

          Couple options I'd look at:

          Rifles: Tikka CTR, Bergara HMR
Scopes: Zeiss Conquest V4, Vortex Viper PST Gen II, Athlon Ares

Those combinations could be put together for $2,000.

Agree'd with SaltyAG. Now there are certainly stock savages with pencil barrels that shoot MOA out to 7-800 yards. But in my experience those are skilled marksmen that have doping and techniques down that want the challenge of use a cheaper rifle. Ruger Precision series is a good entry level gun, heavy but shoots.

Being that you're in college station, I would look up David Lott with DI Precision. Take lessons from Chase or Derek with DI.
Another option would be to contact Aaron Roberts with RPR and take lessons on his Anderson place.

As far as $2k budget, there are good options like Bergara, Tikka, and even some of the production class PRS rifles.

There’s lots of very good builders that are the same price as APR or cheaper.

You can build a nice rifle in that range. Just won’t be flashy.

OP, don’t discount buying a used custom. Lots of deals to be had at places like snipershide and long range hunting .com.

MPA makes a nice entry level “custom” chassis gun priced fair. Seekins does as well with their havak line.

How about that rifle Cajun Blake has been trying to move. Has that Neseka action.

To get under 2k… INCLUDING glass

Buy a used rifle and a SWFA branded scope and a Harris bipod

You will quickly learn the rifle and glass are the Cheap part… heck even barrels arnt bad

                    Ammo is the issue

If $2k is your range without glass then go get a custom built. Remington action if you have one with bolt face desired and tear apart and blueprint it. If not then go buy a Remington action bare and do the same with it. You will easily be able to get one for 2k. I’ve built multiple rifles for people that shot lights out for 1500 if they have a donor 700 and we’re cool with a bare bones setup. I second Jake on DI in College Station for schooling.

Get a savage 12 FV from bass pro in 308 or 6.5 creed they are about 400$. Up grade the stock to something like an oryx chassis. Top it with a good piece of glass 4-16 or 5-25x50 with a 30mm tube. Then spend the rest on ammo or reloading stuff.

My savage 12fv in .308 shot better than I expected. I can easily hold MOA or better out to 800 yards I shoot hand loaded 178gr BTHP Hornady bullets.

I’d also recommend a good bipod and range finder.

Bergara HMR with a vortex strike Eagle 5-25 will meet your budgets and entry level needs.

You could also go with something a little budget friendly rem 700 or savage and put it into a KRG bravo.

What are you looking to do? What distances? Long range to keep might not be long range to someone else and might not be long range to you. 500yds? 1000? 1500? Looking to shoot a mile?

                            Competitions or just for fun?

You can get a $400 Ruger American predator 6.5creed and a $400 vortex Diamondback tactical and shoot 1000yds. However, that wouldn’t be my competition choice. It also wouldn’t be my choice if I was trying to squeeze the tightest groups I could at 1000yds even for fun.

                              Valid questions.

I hear a lot of people say long range then say 250 yards lol.
