6.5 PRC on a XM size action

Has anyone built a 6.5 PRC on a XM size action? I know this limits your options later down the road if you ever want to change calibers but I don’t ever plan on changing. I’d like to shoot the 156 gr. Berger’s so I am interested in a Defiance XM action.

    Anyone ever built off one?

Yes, one PRC and a couple 6.5 SAUMs as well. XM will give you plenty length but bottom metals are tough to find. Just build it on a L/A and shoot heavies (use a long FB reamer like a .140). Built one on a Stiller TAC 300 L/A for a buddy and he enjoys it.

Built mine on a short action kelbly. There’s one for sale in the classifieds. No issues on length running accurate mags

What the XM was designed for, 6.5 prc/saum calibers. I run my 6.5 prc on a long TL3, zero issues and can change up caliber later, rather than be stuck with XM action.

Do you shoot the 156 gr Berger’s or factory Hornady ammo?

Not worried about changing calibers really but if I was going to, I’d change to a 6.5 Saum. I’m not sure if it could be converted to a 7 Saum but I’d look into that option as well.

But at the end of the day, I’m not worried about changing calibers. If I want to change, I’ll build another.

Hand loaded accubonds and factory hornady 147s

FYI parts are harder to get for XM actions so factor that in.

I shoot the 156s, at 3060 with 3ish SD. With all that said, I’d go with a 7 saum next time due to more bullet choices. Brass is almost impossible though, so maybe a 7SS.

That’s a good point. Been trying to decide on caliber for my next build for awhile.

Always been interested in the 6.5 PRC but seem to always get stuck on the action length. I don’t want to build it on a long action, but the short action is too short for the heavier bullets, and parts are hard to find for the XM size. I always thought the XM would be perfect for it though.

I’ll keep researching it and talk to a few gunsmiths and hopefully not end up back at the drawing board trying to figure out the caliber to build. Every other component of the build has been decided.

How long are you wanting your COAL to be? The Hawkins Hunter DBM allows seating to 2.980. A Kelbly’s short action receiver will accept up to 3.05”.

Shameless plug, there just happens to be one for sale in the classifieds. [emoji51]

I think it’s absolutely pointless to build a short action round on a long action. Let’s take 7 Saum for example. If you build it on a long action you might as well roll 7 mag or 28 nosler. Lots of different caliber options but you get the point.

Exactly my thoughts as well. I’ve never understood all the people building long action 6.5 PRC/SAUM. Completely defeats the purpose of the round IMO.

That is my exact reason for not wanting to build it on a long action, just doesn’t make sense to me.

Now I’d be willing to compromise and build of an XM size, but I have no experience with an XM size.

They do always say the short fat rounds are easier to tune and is considered more accurate. Is that True meh but they say it. Also can stick those big bullets way out there and use 100% case capacity in the n long action no matter what
