If I was going to do a lot of crane hunting, I would get a 3.5" 12 gauge at least. I've seen them eat buckshot and keep flying.

My recommendation would be based on what type of shooting conditions your are shooting under.
If shooting over decoys and letting them come in inside 30 yards, I have had great success using my 28 gauge with #5 shot.
I have not hunted geese or ducks with my 12 gauge in a very long time.
If you are sky busting or pass shooting at longer ranges then I would go with something bigger.
