If I was going to do a lot of crane hunting, I would get a 3.5" 12 gauge at least. I've seen them eat buckshot and keep flying.

Before all the shortages, I would duck hunt with my 10 gauge. You don't have as many cripples when you connect. But I am thinking about getting a 20 ga just to have a little better swing on em.

I shot 2 3/4 #5's boss shells this year and killed more ducks and geese graveyard dead than I ever have. 12 gauge.

Will more than likely shoot ducks solely with 20 gauge next season.
That's what I was thinking I just ordered 3 cases if the 3" 3/5s for 12. I really want a 20ga so I think Ill get some more of those

I really only use my 20ga and 28ga now. Shoot bismuth in both. I do not feel handicapped at all shooting the smaller gauges and I prefer them over the 12ga.

My recommendation would be based on what type of shooting conditions your are shooting under.
If shooting over decoys and letting them come in inside 30 yards, I have had great success using my 28 gauge with #5 shot.
I have not hunted geese or ducks with my 12 gauge in a very long time.
If you are sky busting or pass shooting at longer ranges then I would go with something bigger.

This year 20ga steal was hard to find.

Switching to bismuth was amazing for me too, noticed a huge difference

A 20 and a 12 shoot the same velocity. The only difference is the amount of pellets goin down range. If you're shooting decoyin birds a 20 is fine. If you're pass shooting or skybustin a 20 wont do
