22-250 vs 6.5 Grendel for varmints

I'm doing a varmint contest this weekend and wondering if i should use my 22-250 or a 6.5 Grendel bolts gun? i have grown to love my Grendel but I'm afraid it might be too much for bobcats and foxes. what would you guys run? Side note, i will be running my AR 6.5 Grendel with a thermal at night. 2 guns with the same ammo would help on my gear.

    thanks

I'd think the 22-250 would be worse on the smaller stuff because it shoots faster. A lot of it depends on what bullet you're shooting too. Is the contest going by weight or does that not determine the winner? If this contest is going by numbers either one will work. Frangible bullets will tear bobcats and foxes apart out of either one. A bonded bullet would be better because it's going to blow holes through stuff where as a bullet like a v-max is going to blow things apart.

ok thank you, I will be shooting a 123g 6.5 Grendel. i shot a yote with it and it left a soft ball sized hole on the exit. I do have a box of soft points in 22-250. I might as well run that.

I'm not 100% on the contest in the main but there will be side pots of largest cat,dog ect

For a tournament I’d shoot whatever makes sure they get to ride in the truck. I always varmint hunt with a 220 Swift, but use a 25-06 in tournaments. If I happen to hit Em in a bad spot, I want to still find them. I don’t really care about the damage it does to them.

Yeah I'd think the 55 grain softpoints would do just fine. The main thing is you want things dead on the spot first and foremost especially if you're shooting at night. Things can get really hard to find even if they run 25 yards in the dark into thick brush. I've done some varmint hunts in Texas and they went by weight so that's what made me think to ask. Up here you'll see some that are like that but most go by numbers so in that situation you want a gun that will put them down on the spot. Not blowing them apart doesn't come into play as much. But since there are side pots for largest coyote, cat, ect, I think you're on the right track using the softpoints out of the 22-250. Shouldn't blow anything up too terrible bad unless you connect with bone in which case either one is gonna be messy. But the softpoints are more likely to leave a hole instead of blowing a fox or cat in half.

What contest are you running? If it is a weight contest I would run the 250 with the soft points. If it is a numbers contest, run the grendel and don't think twice.

Just looked at where you are hunting. I bet you are hunting the Rockene contest. If that's the case, run that grendel... Just so I have a chance lol

                22-250 for longer flatter shots.

Lol yessir, we are. We have been seeing some pretty big dogs running around. Knowing our luck though, as soon as we pay the entry fee every animal we've seen in the past will disappear!!

Grendel doesn’t open up worth a dang on varmints. I lost a HUGE cat because of it. He’s dead no doubt but made it to some nasty thick stuff. Shoot the 22-250

Those cats are tough too though. But then again so are coyotes. I shot a cat once and he jumped about 4 foot in the air. Didn't run far but still ran into some thick stuff. I got that cat mounted so I told the taxidermist the story and he did a damage assessment on that bobcat. He said I had hit it directly in the heart. Blew it to pieces and that son of a gun still got into the thick stuff.

The problem with bobcats is they find the thickest stuff they can find to die in. And on top of that they're hard to see anyways. But you know how it is. Some things you can hit perfect and they run dead. Some just fall over right on the spot.

If you have a shotgun don't discount that as an option if you'll be calling in places where you'll get close shots. Load it up with some #4 buck or BB loads and you'll be in business. They won't run anywhere and you won't see any damage whatsoever unless they're 10 yards away. I save fur so I love using a shotgun when I can for that reason. It'll shut 'em down fast and they look like they got scared to death.

Best option there is for that in my opinion.
