    R700 action question

I have a rem 700 in 223 that I want to use as a donor action. My kids have been using the 223 as a deer rifle for a couple years and they're ready to upgrade.

From what I understand, the 223 is a "mini action."

Would I be able to basically choose a "mini action" caliber, just rebarrel and go? Or is there more to it?

it's the bolt face-- so you will need to choose a cartridge that uses the same bolt face as the .223-- The 700 SA length is the same across the board BUT one good question would be if the feed rails are the same dimensions- I know for the fat short mags and ultra mags they are wider than standard.

Not really sure what you are wanting to do, but as duckhunter175 points out, the action length and bolt face will dictate what you can do with that action and bolt. If you are wanting to upgrade to a larger caliber (with the exception of a 300 blackout and a few wildcats), you will likely have to change bolts, open up that bolt face, or go with a different action altogether.

Short action with a .223 bolt face doesn't give you a lot of options that really bump you up much in power. I'm fascinated by the 6x45mm, but the .300 Blackout makes the most sense for kids. My son whacks and stacks deer and pigs with it but has recently moved up to a .243. For the cost of a quality barrel and the gunsmithing, you might just buy a new gun and keep the current .223.

            R700 action question

You’ll have to stick to a caliber with a .223 Boltface. Not many options as others have said.

If I were you, I’d sell that rifle and buy a decent custom action with whatever BF you want to base your build off of. Lots of options out there now for a decent price. After the work they’ll need to do on that 700 action, you’ll end up pretty close in price. With a custom action, you’ll get a better action and have a lot better resale value if or when you decide to sell.

I’m in the market for a donor action for a 223 build if you decide you want to sell it.

Been kicking this around as well. The defiance tenacity only ends up being about $85 more than a 700 that's been worked. Putting together a 6xc for my daughter when the funds come around for the action.

you could get a fast twist 223 barrel and shoot the heavier 70-80 gr bullets. maybe even turn it into a 223AI.

aw. if you don't reload, then i'd just leave it as is or more maybe just do a barrel swap to a faster twist barrel.

Make it 204, a fantastic round. Put a quality barrel with the twist that stabilizes the bullet you wanna launch out of it.

Considering you don’t reload, I’d check out the 6.5 grendel, 300 blk. If you’re willing/able to open up the bolt face the 224 Valkyrie or 6arc would be worth looking in to.

6.5 Grendel has a different boltface also.

6ARC is one that I keep thinking about.
