The 6.5 CM was a little longer at 18 inches. I was interested enough to research online the effects of chopping down the barrel but not interested enough to buy one.

That was my thought as well, but I will say even with the 16" barrel on the .308, I've only shot it out to 520 at the range but it plenty accurate.

The whole setup had impressed me.

.308 all day with a barrell less than 20 inches. Better put a brake on it or suppress it. Recoil is going to be fun.

        Fad...Probably not.

It's a helluva round and has its place.

Past 500 yards it outperforms the .308 in terms of energy.

the 6.5 is not going anywhere, it's one of the most popular chamberings out there still today. I have the Sig Cross in a 6.5 and it's a tack driving rifle - keeps up with my full customs in accuracy - legitimate 1/2 moa to 1/3 moa gun out to 200 yards so far with my handloads.

It's very ergonomic and light weight, really like the function of the folding stock and the cheek piece/adj length of pull.
