The issue with wood and blue is the wood can swell when wet and the blue easily rusts. FYI. Yes they are beautiful. But absolutely require a substantial amount more upkeep.

When I was a kid, I used to drool over Colt Sauer rifles.
They had the most beautiful wood and bluing I had ever seen.

Depends on the quality of the gun. I duck hunted for years with a wingmaster, shiny wood and blue. Not drive right up to a blind kind of hunting, slogging through the marsh hunting. Never had much issue with rust. I've got a benelli m1 that'll rust just looking at it, that 870 doesn't since it's quality gloss bluing instead of the matte junk everyone uses nowadays. Swelling is only an issue if it isn't sealed well. As far as upkeep, all my fudd guns get a wipe down with oil on the metal and thrown back in the safe. It's a ton of work.
