Caliber - want a 308 but own a 270
The Federal 175gr Terminal Ascent was available on federal’s website just the other day after being unavailable for almost a year. It’s gone now, but that at least tells me it should be more available soon. That stuff would be great for elk (if you were taking 308, although I’d go with a long action). It’s a tough bullet, I had a complete pass though on a big aoudad with it, and they are tough customers.
I was also able to buy Nosler factory loads of 165 ballistic tips and Federal GMM 168s within the past 2 mos.
All that to say, I agree with others that a light rifle is tough to shoot. If you are confident with your 270, take that.
Cut a pound out of your pack, not your rifle.
“7 something” isn’t too heavy of a rifle.
