    8x57 js ammo

Going through some boxes of old gun stuff I packed from my grandpas basement and found this stuff. Does anyone know much about it?

Online seems to say it’s the same as 8mm Mauser?

Yes. Would fit in a k98 German Mauser. 8mm. Many other countries built Bolt actions on the Mauser k98 platform that also shot it.

    8 x 57, 7.92 x 57, 8 mm Mauser. All pretty much the same thing

4 versions of the 8mm Mauser Rifle Cartridge

There are 4 versions of the 8mm Mauser Rifle Cartridge,
J, which is .318" diameter projectile, with a rimless case.
JS, which is .323" diameter projectile with a rimless case.
JR which is a .318" diameter projectile and rimmed case.
JSR, which is .323" diameter projectile with a rimmed case
also sometimes called and headstamped as JRS.
Pay attention to what you are trying to shoot it thru.

Excellent description, not sure I've ever seen it spelled out this simply. Love all 4 of my Mausers but the 8 mm has a special spot for me as it was my 1st rifle.

I gather guns firing the rimmed cartridges are not too common as this Mauser fan has never seen one.

I'm also guessing the .323" projectile is the most common and what all of the US branded 8 mm ammo is.

They made the change to .323 around 1900 so most mausers you find were made well past that point.

I have found the Nosler 180gr BT is great for our small whitetails.
