Need help: 35 Whelen load data

Magnetospeed shows my 56.0 grains Accurate 2520 and Hornady 200 grain round nose out of my rifle is 2650 FPS. Factory Federal 200 grain fusions are 2850 FPS. Help me change load data to mimic the Federal at 2850 FPS. Should I use another powder? CVA single shot 22" barrel. Both rounds are accurate.

Man 2850, is about typical 30-06 with a 150 gr., that velocity, I would think would be pretty high for that case, with a 200 gr. bullet. It may be possible, but I doubt there are a lot of loads, that will produce those velocities.

      Imr4064 52 grains is a solid load
2800 is not on any charts I have for a safe load in fact that’s 300 dps outside max load

Have you chrono’ed the factory load? That seems a touch fast.

Let me check my notes. I used to load for the 35 Whelen. I mainly used the Speer Hot Core 180gr after seeing one go through both sides of a deer and both sides of a 8” oak tree behind it. I remember the 180 doing about 2950, so I think 2800 is doable with the 200.

Try Winchester Staball 6.5 it will pick up some velocity for you.

Ok, at the time, I was loading from the Lyman 47th version manual. It shows that IMR 3031, IMR4064, and H335 will push a 200gr Jacketed round nose above 2800fps, with H335 pushing above 2900fps. I have the manual min and max loads scratched out with my own (reduced) values written in. I was shooting a Remington 7600, and it may have been a recoil or action lockup issue as to why I might have scratched out the max load. I also have notes stating that H335 was confirmed with the Alliant data at the time, and it appeared to be in line with what Speer’s 13th manual offered for the 180gr and 220gr. I used a lot of H335 back then, and I’ve got notes on using it with heavy 45-70 loads (405@1850fps), again with recoil being mentioned as a concern for backing down charges of H335.

Wow, the max charge weight for H335 on Hodgdon’s website is less than the starting load in the old Lyman manual.

To nullify the naysayers I used magneto speed to confirm FPS for my load and the factory load. Recoil is not an issue.

Hodgdon manual #26 list 63 gr of blc2 at 2807 max load, with 200 gr bullet, I looked through several old loading books I had from years ago and nothing came out higher than the one I listed,,, but it is a max load,, so drop back if you decide to give it a try

xman59, thank you. I think I saw a bottle or 2 of BLC-2 at my local shop the other day. It’s hard to compete with factory blended powders. I’ll give you a it a go.

20+ years ago i was helping a buddy work up some loads for his,,, i had some data from a 1960's Speer manual,, needless to say some loads from that book were very hot,,, we did reach a point of over 3100 fps with a 180 bullet,,, if I locate the book I will send you some data from it,,,,, but use it at your own risk because most of the minimum loads are 2-3 grains hotter than most max loads being published these days, for several calibers not just the 35 Whelen
