    Muzzleloader Primer Question

Have a CVA Optima Pro that I’ve had about 10 years. Lately after i shoot it the spent 209 primer sticks in the breech. I have to use a small screwdriver or pocket knife to pry it out. It has no problem going in though it’s always after a shot. I do keep it clean so that shouldn’t be the issue. The primers are about 10 years old so I’m wondering if that could be it?

Also I’ve always shot CVA power belts which has always shot well, but lately they are getting harder and harder to load. Doesn’t matter if I swab the barrel after every shot or not. Anyone with any ideas?

Mine is the same way....and my primers are 15 yrs old. They still work and my buddy used it to kill his first deer this year.

You didn’t mention which primer you’re currently using. Here’s a list of the diameters for various primer brands. I use both Winchester 209 and Federal 209A in the breech plug of my TC and never had an issue.

Trying a different brand may help. I found this info below online, good luck.

Federal 209A .239-.242 dia. not stepped

      CCI 209 .240-.242

      Rem. 209P .241-.242

Cheddite 209 .240-.243 stepped, most consistent in size

      Win. 209 .240-243 stepped

      Fiocchi 616 .243-.244 *

      Rio type 209/G600 .244 *

      Nobelsport type 209/686 .243-.244*

      * measurements taken by someone else

The stepped, meaning smaller front, makes it easier for the primer to enter the opening. Nice feature.

My primers stick in mine as well. I run a patch with a very small amount of bore butter rubbed into it after every 2-3 shot for the same Loading issue.

I’m using Winchester 209 primers. Only primer I’ve ever used.

I've been shooting the CCI Primers in my Optima Pro for 14 years and only had them stick once or twice at the range after multiple shots.
