    Hornady 6.5 CM question

I've got some Hornady Black 140 Gr HPBT ammo. Is this bullet good to use for hunting? Seems like a lot of the 6.5 CM ammo is very similar in design-long, very streamlined and is hollow point.
What do you recommend for hunting---and see if its available.

Yes, this is my go to bullet for hunting.

I use the hornady precision hunter 143g, I have shot hornady eldx, browing and one other but both the hornady shoot great. It may be the browning that has berger bullets and i have a friend that swears by it. I have personally shot my bergara hmr, tikka, alamo build and hells canyon and all shoot the eld-x and precision really consistent

I don’t shoot 6.5 Creedmoor, but I’ve dropped quite a few hogs and coyotes with the 105 BTHP out of my 6 Creedmoor. They perform pretty well in my experience.

143 ELDX 6.5 , twice this year and happened previous years as well where I have a good heart area shot and bullet exits other side the gut. Not sure if its hitting a rib, shattering and deflecting. Anyone else see this? I've also had them pass straight through with half dollar hole on the exit, but the gut exit bothers me. One ran for 50 + yds and there was no blood trail

The 123gr BTHP Black out of my Grendel was not friendly on the doe I shot.

Tried the hornady 143 ELDX 6.5 last month. First time using it shot a doe at 120 yds. Double lung. Doe ran 40 yds. She died, but there was no blood and the entrance and exit hole looked like a pencil. I started to lose confidence, so the next evening shot an 100 pound hog a 80 yards… Same thing, but the exit was about the size of a nickel with a limited 50 yd blood trail.

My buddy suggested using the hornady black 140 grain from Academy. Shot well on the range so took it hunting. I have killed two deer and two hogs with it this season. Either dropping in tracks or golf ball size exit, which I like.

I'm glad this was brought up as I am now an owner of a 6.5 cm. The only ammo that was available was 1 box of hornady black. I was sceptical about hunting with it ,but since there is nothing else available I was going to give it a try. These replies makes me feel a little better about using it.

Only thing I killed with mine using the black ammo and that bullet was a pig, a doe and a Blackbuck. Blackbuck was a frontal shot went in his front and made it almost all the way through him perfect mushroom. Other was a pig and he was broadside went through him 6.5 entrance about 1 inch ish out maybe a little smaller. Same on the doe. I wouldn't be scared to shoot them

Those are horrible. Send them to me and I’ll dispose of them properly.

Thanks for the feedback, I feel better now. My Savage rifle really likes them and shoots them well.

I have no experience with the Hornady Blacks, however I have & do shoot the 143 ELDX Precision Hunter with great success. I hear others have had some issues with these but every animal I have pinched on just folds up right there.

I started shooting the ELDX this year. Good accuracy in both of the rifles I tried the round. I shot a pig with my 6.5 in the neck and it did a pretty good wound channel cavity. I shot a 40lb pig at 120 yards with my 7mm using the 163gr ELD-X right behind the shoulder and low. Pieces of flesh at impact point with good blood splash. Ran about 5 yards and circle back. Using the same rifle and bullet, I then shot two javalinas that were standing next to each other at 100 yards. The bullet went through the neck on the one standing in front leaving a pencil size hole on entry and exit. The one standing behind was a center gut shot leaving a golf size entry and exit and ran probably 20 yards leaving good blood trail.

Is the 143 ELDX is a BTHP as well? I've always thought that the hollow points were for quick expansion or even just for punching paper as the are supposed to be more accurate.

No sir it’s not. It’s a polymer tipped round. Personally I prefer the ELDM or BTHP for hogs. The ELDX seems to do well on deer, but it can be a little explosive for hogs (which is my main chase).

That said I held a 3.5” group at 814 yds with the factory 103 ELDX at 814 yds. My rifle does love them.
