Which gun to start with to suppress?

I'm not really a gun guy but I want to rig one up to kill hogs with. I would like a smaller caliber than the 30-06 I use for deer and I'd like to suppress it. What do I need to buy in order to be able to suppress it easily? I don't want to buy a gun then realize I should have bought something different. I'm leaning toward a 22-250 but open to suggestions.

Just buy a 22-250 with a threaded barrel. I believe you can buy one in the Ruger American line.

308 and 6.5 Grendel suppress nicely.

As far as what you need you would need a threaded barrel on the rifle. You can direct thread most suppressors, but depending on the suppressor you get you can put a muzzle brake onto the rifle and make it a QD (quick detach) mounting system

I would say a 308 or 7.62X39 in an AR platform. I have killed many with a bolt 308. but with a thermal I have it on a AR 7.62x39. Main thing is threaded and shorter barrel.

Highly suggest shorter barrel. I've got a 22" creedmoor and with a suppressor on it it is pretty cumbersome.

My first choice for a utility rifle would be .308.

I’ve never owned one but the Ruger Americans seem to be well received at a very reasonable price point.

Not sure how much you are looking to spend.

You will definitely want a shorter barrel, 20” or less.

              Agree. 18" max for barrel

By a round you like and a can that fits it. Ive shot hogs with .223, 300blk and 6.5mb all suppressed. And while cool, Ive never been able to get anything but a running follow up shot. But, I dont shoot subsonic. I probably carry a .223 ruger ranch with a 30 cal can the most. I did run the magazine dry shooting at them the other day shooting at different groups 10-15 minutes apart. The 223 bang flops them just as well as the 6.5 when you properly place the boolit

My .243 is quiet and has significant reduction in recoil as well. I've introduced some new hunters with it and they were very surprised how quiet and pleasant to shoot it was.

I just go 450bm with a 10.5 barrel. Subsonic have taken 3 from same group before

For the price..... it is hard to beat a ruger ranch rifle in 300 AAC.
I cut my barrel off to 10" and it will still shoot a 1" group at 100 yards

Just make sure the barrel is threaded on whatever you buy and you're good to go. Bolt Action, 270 is a great all around option. Semi auto, AR10 in 308 all day. Both also offer great ballistics at distance in you ever needed to reach out. That said, if you have a rifle already and want to get the barrel threaded, think it usually runs $150 give or take, if i recall correctly.

Agree with Buff above. The 300 AAC is extremely common now and ammo has taken suit. Whether a bolt action or semi-auto, need a shorter barrel when you hang a 6+ inch suppressor off the end.
