Double set trigger and light primer strike

I have an old Steyr Mannlicher Schonauer in .243 Win. Probably the jewel of my collection and doesn't come out or the safe often. I have had it for 10 yrs or so and in that time have only had it at the range 3 or 4 times.

Anyway, it has double set triggers and if I use the set trigger before firing, I regularly (every other round or so) get a light primer strike ending in a failure to fire. If I forgo the set trigger and only use the other trigger to fire, I don't seem to have the problem.

I think I should only have to get the bolt to a gunsmith for firing pin or spring problems, right? Should I send to Steyr or should a local gunsmith be able to help me? Thoughts?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Have you cleaned the bolt (disassembled) really well? I had an old Mauser that did the same thing if you used the set trigger took 60 years worth of gunk out of her and she worked just fine.

I have not disassembled the bolt, but worth a try for sure. Thanks for the tip!

If it only does it when you use the step trigger, sounds like the firing pin spring is probably good. Sounds like a trigger related problem. There could be something loose or out of adjustment. I would have a good, older gunsmith check it out. Find someone who has been gunsmithing at least 40 years and primarily works on bolt action rifles. Really am good gunsmith should be able to figure it out. But I bought a shotgun, that had been worked on by some smith that had some crazy idea how to fix a problem with the left barrel not firing properly. I fixed the problem easily, by just putting a original firing pin back in the gun. Some machined a custom firing pin, that has multiple design problems.
