338 win mag load info needed

My brother wants me to load his 338 win mag stuff for Africa. Plains game. Need some suggestions on what folks are running. Thinking a 225 or 250 grain accubond and H1000.

If anyone has nosler or Norma brass for it we’d be interested in purchasing.

H1000 could possibly a little too fast for that large case and heavy pill. May consider RL26 or Retumbo

This load shoots good, and hammers em. Killed a pile of African plans game with it, never had to shoot anything twice. Shoots just shy of 3k FPS. I’m not sure where that load is in the load range, so of course check the load data and work up to it in your rifle.

i would be looking in the H4350 or H4831 burn rate for the 225 or 250gr Accubond. Most of my data shows them with good velocity and they are good temp stable powders.

I think the H1000 and slower powders are a bit slow for this one. In the 340 WBY and for sure in the 338 Lapus the slower powders will work well as they have enough case volume to expansion ratio to utilize it

Im not understanding this. I use retumbo and h1000 in my 300 win and 7 rem mag. 338 has a bigger case. I got some reading to do.

I've loaded a bunch of .338 and .300 RUM for 2 friends for their Africa hunts. I gave them Barnes TSX bullets all the way. The only animal they killed that ever took another step was a Zebra that spun around and staggered a few feet and fell dead. My buddy retrieved the bullet which was the only bullet that did not pass thru and brought it back to me to weigh. It was a 185 gr 300 Rum load and the bullet still weighed exactly 185 grs. Their PH was so impressed with these rounds that he traded them another animal for all the bullets they had left over.
African plains game animals have a tenacity for life like no other on the planet. Even the little antelope critters are tough. Give them some solid bullets and plenty of velocity that will break shoulder bones and get pass thru holes.

For my .338 win mag I load 68gr of IMR 4350 behind 225gr TSX and GMM primers. Shoots 1/2 moa from my Browning X bolt safe queen. Don't know the MV but it's not that important.

I used Retumbo and accurate 8700 for the RUM's
Retumbo for the 300 was most accurate.
8700 was best for the .338 RUM
8700 is discontinued but I still have a pound in my stash.

I use H4350 behind 210 grain Barnes TSX bullets in my 338 win mag (10 twist 22-inch barrel).

I did a lot of load testing before settling on H4350. It was apparent pretty quick when I tried it, that was the combo to use. The target that I posted won’t win any bench rest matches, but the one high was operator error. I’m not recoil shy, but I wouldn’t volunteer to deliver that load for anyone. I guess a person could use a lead sled, but I’ve always been Leary because of the story’s of them being hard on optics. Before going to Africa on my first trip I spoke to a man that had been many times, he told me I could should shoot any bullet I wanted to as long as it was Barnes! I’ve followed his advice over the years, and glad I did. This ol Sable never took a step shot in the chest at 220yrds

                          Thanks guys.

I considered the Barnes. But have seen them pencil through an awful lot of animals. I love the accubond. I’ll try 4350 as well. Thank you!

I have used the 225 grain SST on deer. It works
