Been using .22 Hornet or .223 for years, finally giving in and going with the 22-250, coyotes have become so plentiful around here they've been upgraded to primary targets. Either one you go with bullet selection will be a major factor in performance, I'm gonna start with Hornady varmint express and work from there.

Are you saving pelts or just shooting to kill them?
I've killed lots with both. If saving fur the 22 250 wins. If you want an absolute coyote hammer that will anchor them even with a marginal shot the 243 with 70 grain bullets is wicked. Trajectory that is basically the same but hits way harder.
I just had a 22 creedmoor built which with 75 gr bullets will equal the 243 velocity but has better BC for longer shots

Both the 22-250 and the 243 will work great. The 243, will be better on long shots out in the open, with higher wind speeds.
Like txagyotebuster asked, are you saving the pelts? If you are not just want dead coyotes, 243 Win. 6mm Rem. 6.5 Creedmoor, 257 Roberts, 25-06, would all be great for just killing coyotes.
I have read of guys who are hard core pelt hunters, some of those guys like to hunt with 17 caliber and even some like 14 caliber guns, to reduce pelt damage. By far, I have killed more coyotes with a 223, but then I have shot a 223 a lot more than I shot my 22-250.

Either one will hammer them. I shoot a 22-250 and my brother and one of my buddies shoot a .243, my brother uses an 87 or 90 grain bullet. My buddy shoots a 58 grain v-max. The light weight bullets tear them up too bad but I save fur so that's not my preference. The 22-250 has done just fine for me. I've killed one coyote at 362 yards and another at 367. Furthest coyote kills with it so far. My uncle shoots a 22-250 also and has killed one at 500 yards. It's a flat shooting cartridge so that's why I like it for coyotes outside of 300 yards.

I like the 243 bc you have lots of options on size. You can load a round just about as fast as a 22-250. with a 58gr Hornady going 3925 fps But also have the range to go up in size up to 120 gr if you wanted. My coyote gun is a 243 and i shoot the Hornady 75gr Vmax @3580 fps and I love them. Perfect for Yotes and pigs.
Now that said, either one is a perfect option for Coyotes so can't go wrong either way. Hard to argue that one is any better than the other for Yotes...Last edited by Fmjag64; 07-30-2020, 09:33 AM.

I have shot a lot of different things on coyotes. I haven't shot a 22-250 as much as I have a 220 Swift, but they are pretty much the same. Either will do good work.
I'll be honest though. The 243 shooting an 87 VMAX is my absolute favorite for coyotes. I shoot lots of open country. Even when ranges are long and the wind is blowing it will cut through and score hits. You can add 100-150 yards on top of what a 22-250 will do if you know your dope. It is hard on fur, don't expect to save many hides. But also don't expect many to run off either. I have had to shoot a few twice, but I can't remember ever losing one with the 243.
