With a red dot you focus only on the threat impose the dot over it and break the shot. You only focus and remain focused on the threat. This is what your mind will naturally want to do.

With standard iron sights you focus on front sight, line up the front in the rear notch, put the front sight on the threat and break the shot. It’s three planes to align to be shot accurately.

Earlier in this thread it was stated that RDS are worthless on a carry gun.

      Red Dot Pistol Checklist

      1. Is the dot on?
      2. Will the dot stay on when I need it?
      3. Is my lens clean?
      4. Is my dot set on the right brightness level for my current environment?
      5. Is my lens fogged because I just went from a cold to a hot environment?
      6. Do my 511 pants look cool?

      Iron sight Pistol Checklist

      1. Load gun.
      2. Holster gun.

This. Why even aim? Just squeeze off indiscriminate rounds.

          3. Yes, It’s covered with a cover garment 100% of the time when it’s on me.
          4. It stays on (seeing a trend here?) third from highest setting and works in all environments.
          5. No it’s not. Because Cat crap
          6. Wow so edgy.

No reason for a red dot on a carry handgun. I have a red dot (Sig) on my defensive shotgun, zeroed with slugs, and effective with buckshot also. I]d rather have a decent laser on a handgun that could be activated if needed, but not obstruct the iron sights. And, a good laser would likely be as good or better than the Sig Romeo on the shotgun.

It's all in fun, don't mean to sound edgy. Carry whatever you feel comfortable with. Just know the dot stays on until it doesn't for all the reasons stated here. Irons don't turn off. I'm a big fan of a red dot sight and have many including DP Pros and a RMR but I'm not willing to bet my life on them or have the extra hassle of keeping up with them in the situations I listed.

The type 2 adjustable LED RMR’s are much better than other options out there and previous RMR iterations. I only have ~4K through mine but I’d bet my life on it without hesitation (obviously lol). I’m just plain faster with the dot and prefer the target focused approach. My eyesight doesn’t like the irons as much.

And you can get an RMR that doesn’t even need batteries.

The situations where they are less than ideal are slim.

I have done this myself and maybe it's just me, but my draw to first shot times are better with irons than dots on a 7 yard target and making an A zone hit. I don't know if you know much about USPSA divisions, but this was using my 2011 open guns vs my 2011 limited gun with irons both in 9mm. I shoot Open division with a dot 90% of the time and I know for sure that follow up shots and target transitions are faster with a red dot, but that initial shot from draw is better negotiated from a pistol with a front sight as a reference when presenting the pistol.

I would have to look at the data collected. All I remember was overwhelming data from all aspects for red dots. These were not competition shooters, but seasoned SWAT guys. Shot identical G17s iron and dot.

And for the record, my edc does not have a dot

Once I free up some coins my G19 will get a RMR it’s the best way to shoot a pistol. My brother has a 26 thats got a Red dot and I have a 20 with one too they are very accurate. My brother can stretch the 26 out and hit 5”x5” plates first shot 50-70 yards.

Irons suck and hardly ever work when I need them to
