Was with a good buddy last year in Utah when he dropped a bull at 250 with a 6.5 using ELDX rounds.

This year I will leave both of those at home and go with 7mm RM with 154 terminal ascent. I have not used terminal ascent on game before but they are very accurate at the range.

I’m loving the terminal ascent as well!!
Just ordered ten more boxes today off federal’s website. Pricey, but I don’t want to run out come fall and can’t find it anywhere right now. Aoudad in October will be the first game it sees, but feeling good after drilling 6” steel at 600 with the 175gr 308.

If the performance on game is half as good as it’s supposed to be, my 16” 308 may see a lot more time in the field.

I shot mine at 47 yards with a 100 grain muzzy.
Anything 270 caliber or above will do the job.

I killed my first elk in 08 with my .243 at 250 yards. Its all about shot placement.

If your looking to buy something new I would go with a .300 wsm

I would nix the 243 not nearly enough bullet. You mention you have a 308. I do also and have taken elk with it. If your into factory ammo I am a firm believer in Hornady 178 gr ELDX as that is the only bullet I now shoot in my 308. Its taken down the following all with one shot at the following ranges......
              Bull-235 yds
              Whitetails-100-325 yds
              Stag - 225 yds
              Tahr -225 yds
              Wild goats -520 yds
              Mule deer - 320 yds
Pigs -275 yds including one (threefer)

My point is this bullet is phenomenal in performance, it is devastating upon impact and just plain lets the air out of whatever it hits. The wound channel (internally) is quite unbelievable in the chaos it creates. Unless you make a really bad shot you won't have to look very far for your target animal after the shot. Good luck!

                  Exactly.

Use a good nosler accubond bullet and your golden

.280ai would be a solid choice.

.308 can do a lot of things, especially if you are comfortable with it.

Just use or buy whatever you want to use and what you like. Elk are not invincible. I’ve never killed one with anything over a .284 caliber but I’m sure that’ll change as I’ve been wanting to get a few with my .30-06. Honestly under 250 yds a .243 will be fine. I’ve seen several go down from well placed .243 shots.

                              I’ve got a .280 AI in a 5lb 6oz rifle that I would bring with me.
