    Mossberg Maverick

Is the Maverick 88 all-purpose a decent shotgun? At sub-$200 new at academy it looks like one of the cheapest hunting shotguns out there. I haven’t heard much bad about mossberg as a whole.

I have only ever owned one hunting shotgun at any given time, but I’m thinking about going with a nicer upland/clays gun and a cheap synthetic pump for backup and occasional duck hunts. Having owned a Remington 870, would a maverick disappoint?

    Thanks all.

Maverick is a pretty decent budget shotgun better quality than a lot of the others in its price range

Comparing it to the 870 it would be disappointing. Comparing it to other $180 Shotguns, it works fine. I have one just for a extra dove gun when someone want to go at the last minute. Academy had a buy a gun get a free super combo licence last year and I couldn't pass it up.

Hecho in Mexico if it matters to you. Should be a good gun though. A 500 is only a little more and Made in America. And while some 500 parts work on a Maverick, others don't, so if you are into accessorizing, you won't have as many options.

I cant imagine the finish on the Maverick could possibly be any worse than what is on the 870 express guns, a Wingmaster on the other hand is a different story.

Overall I think the Maverick if a decent gun for the money

          Made in Mexico now?

Dang, had a couple made in Eagle Pass but got rid of them back in the day.
Not a bad budget friendly shotgun.

I have a 500 in excellent shape I'd sell for 200.00. Looks a lot nicer than a maverick IMO. PM if interested.

Good catch, they are assembled in eagle pass but many of the parts are made in Mexico. So i was not 100 percent correct on that one

I've got one, it's a decent bang around the lease in a sxs or other abusive conditions gun, one problem they have is the ejection rod can be jarred out of its track if it's dropped or bumped in the right direction, it's easy to fix, I've had to do it once and I've had mine for 6-8 years.

My dad has one in 12ga that he got probably 7 or 8 yrs ago, and if I’m honest the stupid thing is at least as good as my 870 which I paid $100 more for. I have never seen the maverick jam or fail to eject, and I’ve put a whole bunch through it. My 870 does have that problem every once in a while. Definitely the 870 is nicer to look at but imo as far as function the maverick is every bit its equal if not a little better (which kills me to admit because like I said, I paid more for the 870 and he was right again.)

I have a super black eagle 2, a nova, and a maverick. The maverick gets the most use and has never failed me.
