    Duck hunters

I shot 4 different loads today Winchester 3” #4’s(inexpensive Winchester), Boss 3” 2’s and 4’s and Federal 3” 3’s(regular Federal plain steel) at 30 yards.
The Federal 3’s and then the Boss 4’s shot the best. I was using an 870 12 gauge and Patternmaster Classic Long Range choke.
I tried posting a couple pics but I cannot get them to post. Either way, for most instances are the Federal 3’s pretty good for ducks?

1 1/4 oz #3's will give you really good pattern density and that helps out with more lethal head and neck hits.

They are a really solid option as long as they are choked properly and the birds are within range. At 30 yards it will be like flipping an off switch on ducks, they will crumple instantly.

I shoot a lot of #3's, but switch to #2 or even #1s later in the season.

Yep #3s are good. What ever patterns best is what you should shoot.

Can someone post 2 pics for me? I have the 4 30 yard targets but can’t get them to post.

I use 3" #3 for marsh hunting and 3" #4 for timber hunting, I switched to the Hevi-Hammer shells this past season and love them, far less cripples and a much better pattern with a factory choke. Not a bad price either.

Always just shot the cheap Winchester 3" #2 shot when we were hunting them religiously. And alot of times we were even slinging #1 and bb if they didn't have #2 in stock. With the bb you could really reach out and touch them.

I have shot 3" #4 Kent Fasteel as long as I remember. Been my favorite. However the new style fasteel i felt did not perform as well this year. Need to pattern it.

I bought a few boxes of Herters 3" #4 at cabelas and I was blown away by how it performed.

I also shoot an Improved Cylinder choke with my Beretta AL390. Say what you want it's been knocking them in the water for 10+ years now. I don't sky blast. I shoot 25 yards and in.

Personally, I'd shoot a more open choke. Those look more like turkey patterns than duck patterns to me. I killed piles and piles of birds out to 40 yards or so with a skeet choke and 20ga 3" 2's and 4's at 1330fps. But they patterned good out of my gun. I also shot some of the Remington Wingmaster HD 3" 6's out of that gun and it was like Thor's hammer as far as I was comfortable shooting a duck.

Kent has been a great shell in the past. No more than i hunt these days i have a surplus of ammo. i would look into boss bismuth moving forward.

The federal steels always shot somewhat of a donut pattern for me. I had good luck with RIO Royal Blue also.
