    Custom Burl Wood Stocks

I think I'm about to pull the trigger on a custom rifle, but don't want a synthetic stock. I am wanting a good looking burl wood stock or something with a lot of definition. Is there anywhere I can order or have a stock made for a Rem 700 action?

Yes. Big bucks for nice ones.

What is your budget ? You will spend $300 (plain vanilla figure) to $3000 (highly figured English walnut) just on the blank. Then it will cost around $300 for a 90% rough inletting of your action, bottom metal, and barrel contour. To complete the stock with a recoil pad, hand rubbed oil finish, and fine-line checkering, it’s gonna cost $1500+ depending on the checkering options and stock maker.

If looking for a finished stock, drop-in ready with lots of definition, it’s gonna be hard to find one because they’re custom made according to the client’s specifications. I’ve owned a lot of custom rifles and only built 2 with wood stocks. I easily had $2500 invested in the stock and that was 2005 prices and getting deals on the stock work.

Not trying to discourage you or stop you from building a dream rifle, just stating the facts as it’s gonna cost some $$$$. If your budget is $4000 on the complete rifle build, go for it. One last thing, be prepared to wait 1-2 years for the completed wood work as great stock makers are in high demand with long backlogs.

If you find a used stock that will work for your build, make sure it’s pillar and glass-bedded for your action. Wood is porous and will expand/contract based on weather conditions - not good for accuracy. Pm me if you have any questions as I still know people on the business including the owners of Luxxus Walnut

Claro walnut, paid $425 in 1996

Select English walnut , huge blank , enough for 2 sporter stock, paid $1500 in 1995

Some beautiful wood there CB. I used to be friends with Joe Balicke and got to see some absolutely gorgeous wood at his shop.

Accurate Innovations is the company that Clayton recommends at West Texas Ordnance. Their wood stocks have a patented aluminum chassis installed.

Make sure whoever you use to build the rifle with your custom wood stock is comfortable with wood. There are rifle builders that will not build wood stocked rifles these days, especially a 2500.00 wood stock. Quite strangely some rifle builders do not want to mess with hot blued rifles anymore, I guess its easier to call Mcmillan and order a composite stock and cerakote the metal. Less labor intensive I suppose.

And I’ve wanted to get a high figure wood stock built for years. Just never can justify the 3-4K it’ll cost.

I was thinking about spending $1500 to $2k. That is some beautiful lumber Blake!

                            Wood stocks

I know there is nothing like the feel of a wood stock but if you can get past that, you can have the synthetic stock hydro dipped in a burl wood film. There are a lot of different patterns out there. Just a thought.

Another of my stock blanks that I bought and sold, never saw the finished product. Pretty sure this is quilted maple ~ $400. Purchased from a dealer in Minnesota around 2002.

This will make you cry ... stock duplicator calls you and says your stick cracked at the pistol grip during inletting as beautiful as the outside of blank is, you never know what the pattern and density will be until the final shape is completed. Wood is a love/hate relationship. Because of the aesthetics and price invested, you’re scared to use it in the field and get a scratch, gouge, or dent in the wood.
